My good buddy is a furniture maker and an excellent wood carver. Well after I showed him the two ( soon to be three) new JKs I have, he loved them. He would like one that he could use and specified that it be used for wood carving. Any suggestions?

I would say something with a fairly thin, shorter (maybe about 3"), blade, with a longer handle for better control with less hand fatigue.

Do you know what kind of carving he would use it for? Detail work? General use? Recreational whittling?

I agree with everything you said...even less than 3 inches might be good. Do you have anything like that already profiled?

I think he just loved John's work and wants one. But he wants one he can throw into the mix and use. He has everything you would need at any stage as a professional woodworker, he just loved the idea of having a custom tool he could use as well.

Personal Utility - that is the reason I ordered one -

I do not have anything like that on hand, I will have to think about it. Or maybe have a "Design A Wood Carving Knife" contest.

Don't we all!

I would offer two things, maybe a general use "shop knife" such as the Element Wharnie that I will be picking up at the Gathering in a few days (yes!!!). I would think that is something that would come in handy on a daily basis in the wood shop.

If it's a custom carver that he really wants have him sketch up a design of his own. With the kind of skill and experience he has, I would have to guess that he has some pretty specific likes and dislikes. This would give him the chance to get something that would be truly useful, not a suggestion from the comparatively inexperienced lot here.

Post some pics when it comes in!!

Love that one mqqn.... Might eventually get one of those for myself! Looks like it would do the job.

I think a little more handle would be appreciated, I have large mitts, and like John said, you want a longer handle and a shorter blade.

I have not done any carving with this little guy, but this weekend will change that while at the Gathering.

It sure is a beauty of a tool and a nice design from cvc -

What do you think about a shorter razor shaped blade (like a standard retractable utility knife) to go along with that longer handle?

Have a great time this weekend mqqn!

I'm thinking more of a straight edge for carving and ease of sharpening. Maybe a blade as narrow as 1/2".

A smaller blade, and a larger, more round handle - Something like these

I'm heat treating a dedicated carving knife right now. If it works like I expect it to I will bring it this weekend for everyone to try out. If it passes the test I may do a pass around with it.

I like the idea, but I would want a slightly wider and stronger blade and narrower handle I think. The overall idea seems very appropriate for carving though.

I think you will like the one I'm making, pictures late tomorrow.
