I'd like to know what the absolute minimun size block (5" LENGTH is no problem) I would need to purchase to re-handle a 21" Chitlangi. While I have your attention :D , is their anything more "noble" than presentation grade ironwood (Olneya Tesota) for a khukuri handle? Please also direct me to a foumite likely to be willing to perform the work for me.

Thanks for your help, Woodchucks!

Dan :)

Your handle flair determines the length. Max handle thickness determines width. Give at least 1/8 inch extra on both sides for both l and w.

You'll need a block 6.5" (minimum) long, and 2.25" wide at one of the ends.

Ironwood is tough to get in that size and $$$.

There are other alternatives. I'll look around at my charts and come up with something. Gotta go right now - maybe tomorrow.

Bigger than what you'd think. I think the AK I rehandled I started out with like a 6x2x3" slab. You take a LOT off too.

We had fun watching you take it down Hollow...have you stopped sanding yet?

Now we know why they use a Khuk to chop them down in production...sanding just plain takes too long.

As I worked on the handle I flashed on the thing where it says "It can take a Kami the whole day to do one khuk".. "yeah" I thought "most of that is the HANDLE!!

Actually almost done on the handle. I had it completely done and ready to finish and then I decided it was STILL too dag gone thick. I sanded more and now it is one of the best most comfortable handles I have ever had.

I got the little angled ridge done but still need to file the little rings like the handles have and steel wool the whole thing. Then I need to cut about 1/2" of the tang off since I cut the Habaki bolster off and put on the keeper and peen the tang down and stain and finish it.

I'll take some pix when done. I may try to do another soon cause I can make the handles twice as "user friendly" as they usually come on the big guys.

Id buy 12X2x3 minimum to try to get the straightest, strongest grain out of it. ;)

In the lumber trade The short peices are often cut from between knots or from trimming the edges off Taperd width planks & other varieties of waste & have distorted grain within them. ;) :D

Musical instrument quality is the prime straight grain material. ;)

Of course burr is another matter. ;) :D

The owner of Arizona Ironwood, Robert Bradley, recently received a nice selection of ironwood logs, and will do his best to find what I'm looking for. It would make a nice khukuri handle material!
