One of Nok's renditions of bowies and hawk. Hope you like them. Randy

Hi cliff exept for cutting the peices with a skill saw they were all hand filed and hand sanded. I've since gotten her a table sander that is saving her allot of rough file work but she still hand finishes them all. She's just putting the finishing touches on three more hawks and another bowie. When she has them ready I'll put up another pic. Heres a before and after of a F2 Dagger she made. Randy

Really nice symmetry on the dagger. A change from wood+rasp to file+annealed steel could produce some very interesting blades.

Nok really likes the wood. In the two and a half years she has been making her blades she has hand made over 2500 contact trianers and well over 300 wooden blades( swords, fighters, and hawks even a couple of wooden folders that had Axis type locks) all by hand. I'm so lucky I see custom blade I want or have an idea in my head and say hey Nok make this for me. I bet I've got a hundred different wooden blades and at least fifty different contact trainers just for me to play with . And as I teach AMOK for a living I end up using a trainer much more then I do a live blade thank god. Randy

Is that one of the micro blade rasps? I always meant to try one of them as they are supposed to cut very well and leave a much finer finish than the traditional rasp.

How long do you find the wooden knives last, or do you have no real issues with contact durability. I think I'd rather mangle some production steel knives than those wooden ones.

Hi cliff
The fancy wood blades are ment more for solo practice ,controled paired drills, as displays and gifts to other knifers. For hard contact work Nok has her own design of contact blades. Heres her Voyager type design in wood and contact models. Sorry can't tell you much about the rasp just someing she picked up at a Thai flee market. Randy

Really graceful handle sweep on the wooden one, it contrasts nicely with the crisp nature of the clip point.

What is it with all these people in Thailand?

Where do they get all this talent? :D

I believe there are several on the forums here that do great work of various sorts.

Thanks for the pics.

The knife above is all one slab of wood with handle slabs on the sides. Heres three more hawks and a new bowie. Again I hope you enjoy them.

Out of curiosity, how do these handle. Are they mainly just aesthetic or are they well balanced?

This is proabably not politically correct but what the heck . A few of the hawks resemble what cold steel is touting as a vietnam hawk . Is this type native to the asian world or just an efficient design ?

Are you talking about this Kevin...?

There is nothing Asian about this apart from the name, is just a copy of the one Peter Lagana designed and I think it was first used in the Vietnam war (by a US unit).

To tell you the true I know nok has never seen a cold steel hawk. She sits down draws out the shapes on the wood freehand from her head with a pencil and goes to work. They are design more for their artistic look more then to be the best functional design, They do move very well in your hand allthough being wood they don't match the weight of a steel hawk. They are more for solo practice, display, and gifts to others with an interrest in hand made items and hawks and knives. I love them because of their natural feel. wood blades feel very primal to me as they pre date blades of steel. thanks for looking Randy and Nok

Thanks Randy .

Have you thought of fire hardening techniques for the wood blades ?
There is supposedly one for hickory which entails soaking it and heating it somehow . It was only spoken of once to me and in truth I have not been able to research it further .

The technique may come from the deep south as the man who mentioned it was from there and they have lots of hickory trees .

There is also another techniques involving a heavy beeswaxing of the piece of wood and placing it well up the chimney of a fireplace .

I realise this was not your original intent and only mention it as it interests me and I wanted to see if it was of value to you .

I wonder if Nok will ever make a wooden switchblade ? L:O:L

She hasn't done any fire hardening yet but she does soak them with super glue which hardens them up quite a bit and fills in the grain of the wood nicely giving them a glass like finish before she aplies 4 to 6 coats of acrylic lacquer.

She hasn't done a switch blade but she has done a couple of tacticl folders complete with working spring loaded axis type barlocks (notice the button on the back of the handle) they were ahell of allot of work and gave us a whole new respect for the fit and finish it takes to make a folding knife. Wow... Those 'hawks are absolutely gorgeous. Would love to have one hanging on a wall. How would one obtain a marvelous piece of art like that?
