wooden handle care

I like to use superglue. Using rubber gloves, spread a thin layer over the scales and let dry. Apply as many times as you wish, then use fine steel wool to smooth the surface and apply a coat or two of Briwax.

Sand. One coat boiled linseed....let dry three days. Buff with 000 steel wool. Apply several coats (as few as seven - as many as 20) of 1 pound cut fresh-mixed blonde shellac....let dry 20 mins between coats, then buff with 000 steel wool between each coat....let dry one day. Apply any paste wax (or shoe polish [same thing]). Apply the wax with 000 steel wool. Let dry 10 - 20 mins, buff to sheen.

This buffing between coats on the linseed oil and shellac should be done as if you are trying to scrub all the finish from the surface (because you ARE trying to do that). This includes the last coat of shellac before the wax coat.

On an already finished handle from a custom maker or factory, a nice paste wax (for wood, not cars) or mineral oil works nicely. If it's an old dried handle and you want to refinish it, linseed oil is my first choice, depending on handle condition you can just give it a quick hand rub or soak it for a few days first.

ditto! i sand down the handle with 3m wet and dry paper, then soak for several days in turp & linseed oil, pull er out of the bathtub (where else do ya expect me to do this...hehehe) and snad it wet. Then i wipe it dry and brush with 100% linseed oil, let cure for 5 days, steel wool 0000 and repeat.

then its onto the french shellacs!

Restoring the wooden handle on an old Opinel? Its very slippery and I'd like to bring it back to a sheen and make it more grippy as well.

Cheers, Acolyte.

start by sanding it down, maybe use a very thin chainsaw file (round) and file in little grooves on the side fro grips (after grooving, heat up the end of the file with a torch and burn in the grips, leaves a nice black contrast). Sand again lightly and soak in linseed/tun oil mix, dry and steel wool, then repeat.

I'll try to dih up an old photo i had of a large opinal i modded htis way....

Never heat a file-it ruins them.
On an Opinel, I would sand the handle with 320 grit until it is clean. Buff with 0000 steel wool, and then spray lacquer it.
