Wooden handle plus/minus

I really really like the look of the SOG Tomcat II with the cocobolo handle.

The only thing I'm worried about is moisture getting in the wood and cracking it or something. Now, I don't use the knife in the water that much if at all....but I cannot prevent moisture from touching it, whether that be when I'm washing the blade off, it being on the sink while I'm steaming up the bathroom in the shower, moisture from my hands, etc.

Is it really something to worry about?

What about scratches and other "normal" wear on wooden handled knives?

Thanks!

Treat the wood. Dings and scratches will occur. Treat the wood again periodically and the handle should last you a lifetime.

Do you have any recommendations on products? Any links are appreciated. Thanks!

I do not know if the wood on your knife has had a sealer applied. If it has it should be pretty resistant to problems from water, unless it is soaked for quite a long time. If it is not sealed then oil it regularly and you should have no problems. As time goes by, if the knife is used a lot, the wood is likely to get a little scarred up. That just adds to the character of the knife. Light scratches can be sanded out with a very fine sandpaper that will polish the wood at the same time. After sanding, just re-oil and it should look like new.

Ahhh, thanks. Yes, I was thinking the same about it adding character. I don't have the knife yet but I think I will get it now. I'm sure it is pre-oiled or I will do it myself when the time comes...ok, sounds good then! Thanks,

PS - I like your sig.....9/11 still pisses me off...will be joining active duty Army later in the year so I will have my chance ;)
