As a kendoka, iaidoka, and aikidoka, I have been curious for some time about doing technique, especially aikido technique with a kukiri in hand.

I know that a certain other kukiri importer sells balanced kukiri shaped wasters for use in the martial arts, however their shipping prices are ridiculous for a small purchase like that.

I wonder if Auntie Yangdu could find such a thing?

Back during my Ren Faire days, I got acquainted with the folks at Purpleheart Armoury, who expressed a willingness to make custom wasters. That was, admittedly, several years ago, but if it holds true, I think they'd be quite willing to give a wooden khuk the old college try.

Are you expecting numerous forceful impacts between the waster and another waster or other hard object?

Depends, if I was blocking then it means I am basterdizing iaido principles into kukiri usage, aikido of course is usually done emptyhanded, so it doesn't really teach blocks. Iaido is all about blocking with the least resistance, so theoretically I should be avoiding forceful impacts, at the same time I suppose I would like to have as durable a waster as is practical.

If you've got an unused cutting board laying around, consider tracing your khukuri on it and cutting a waster out of it. The HDPE boards tend to be a bit heavier than wood and should work fine if you're not bashing them around too much.

Use a rasp or a belt sander to round off the edges and the point for safety, of course. Alternatively you could probably pad them a bit and use a few tight wraps of duct tape to secure everything. (This also works for building up the handle to proper dimensions.) The result will not be pretty but it should serve very well for an inexpensive, safe training implement.
