I have where some makers have wooden liners in thier leather sheaths, anyone know how this is done,or any info would be great.also since i dont have the right camera,or know how to post a pic of a knive,if i sent a pic to someone, could you post it for me.thanks royboy,

Roy,I have never tried one myself but have seen a couple.First, the wood is split in half, then lay the knife on the halves and trace the outline of the blade. The area inside the line plus about 1/16"has to be routed out. This can be done with a router,Dremel w/attachment or a good chisel.Go easy because if your to deep the blade will flop around.Hand sand and glue halves back together, finish outside. The leather was done two different ways. One was cut oversized and stitched down both sides. The other was wrapped and the seam stitched on the backside using a curved needle. This method looked better to me.If I was going to do this I would make a scrap wood blank to use for fitting and make it longer to ease pulling it out.Tandy Leather used to have a book by Al Stohlman called The Art of Making Leather Cases. This covers alot of this.Hope this helps.Dave :)

thanks dave, thought it was some thing like that, saw a sheath that bill moran did.looks good, and its neat.I have heard of thisal stolman, tryed to find him in a libary, but no luck.guess I"ll try tandy.thanks for info, see ya.you know some day all of the knive forum guys should get together and meet,be cool.

Roy, I'll be happy to post pics for you. If you like you can send them to me at work, mailto:larsendavid@johndeere.com though because my internet provider is having problems and my personal email does not work presently.

I think by now you could call yourself a knifemaker, and spring for the "Knifemaker" membership here and post pics the easy way! :D

We're all looking forward to seeing what you've been making.

Dave

RoyBoy,I have made a couple without the leather cover...They are not to bad..I think they can be done the same as the Throat and tip sheaths were you make a core and glue the leather around the core and stitch up the back...I will call and ask Alex Daniels how to do it and let you know..
If You can't get a picture to Dave just let me know and I will be glad to post it for you..

Not exactly what you're talking about, but I made this wood sword sheath with a leather throat and bands.

I routed out two pieces of redwood (like Dave said), lined it with felt (to protect the blade finish) and wet-molded leather around two separate areas. The leather around the opening is molded around a carved "button" to keep it in place and stitched in back. This leather end "grabs" the guard and retains the sword. Each area where the leather sits is routed/carved down to make the leather flush with the wood- and to help keep it in place.

The whole thing is sort of like a puka (sp?) sheath. It was my first (last?) attempt at a wood sheath, and I think it came out ok. If you want any tips from my limited experience/knowledge base, let me know.

I made a wooden sheath (not leather covered) for a reproduction I made of a Ricky Fowler Model 146, too bad the knife is made of wood also. :(

I made it just like DC said and the fit is perfect, it even has a belt loop in the back.
