well, I have finally found my right set up. A becker, wetterling, leatherman and a Victorinox are going to be the ones I pick up heading out the door.
The becker finally arrived today, and I made my way to the post office to pick it up. Here it is along side its "Team mates"

I was amazed at how well the BK7 felt in my hand, The handle was the right size, the blade wasn't to long, or heavy. It just felt solid in my hand. Now I need to get out tomorow and try it out :D

i would offer that a single multitool instead of two and smaller fixed and then the hatchet. The big mother knife is almost a duplicate in use of the axe and the two multitools are a duplication.

I carry a small folder, (older buck odyssey) a mid sized BRKT fixed, (clip point skinner) and a older eastwing double bit camp hatchet. I have yet to find myself needing or wanting a larger fixed blade or a multi tool.

Great choices! VERY similar to the configuration that I carry (sometimes), except I'd drop the SAK and replace it with a 4" Mora. The 7" blade is usually along as a backup. However, I do believe in a bit of redundancy more often than not. keep the SAk and add a Mora as a neck knife. :-)

That is a nice looking grind on the BK7, mine looked really chunky so I fixed it.

Maybe pick up a BT&K BK9 or BK1 and lose the axe.

Then I like a folder for GP like a CRKT Desert Crusier or M21.

Congrats, nice set of tools. They'll handle everything that needs to get done quite well.

KK you did a great job on those Beckers. I'd like to thin out my necker a bit and remove the coating. When it was brand new I sliced into a potatoe right out of the fire and the coating held the starch for months.

Sweet. You gotta do yourself a kydex sheath for that BK7.

Those are the mikarta scales that Camillus sells.

I thought about getting a kydex made for my 7, but I really like having the addition of some basic gear in the pouch. I'd probably opt for a survival sheath for it that has the pouch. Right now, my sheath is doing OK.

It wouldn't be hard to lace a little pack of gear onto the front of a kydex rig though. Then it'd be safer than the nylon one. I was scared I'd stick the blade behind the insert, through the nylon, and into my own butt.

I think I have accdentally missed the insert that way. Luckily didn't stab or hurt myself doing it. I say "think" because I can't emagine actually doing it, but one day I came to take my knife and I noticed it wasn't sheathed properly. So unless someone else picked it up and inserted it wrong, it must have been me.

I hate it when that happens!!!!! :D :D :D

"Hey yer butt is bleedin!" , "I ain't got time for a bloody butt!"

I have the same deal with my Rat-7. I love the Nylon sheath with the extra pouch (for my SAK or Gerber tool) , but, that flakey plastic insert doesn't give me a lot of confidence.
My thought: Was looking into making a kydex insert that came up above the nylon's opening and expanded a bit, so it would make it impossible to "miss the hole" , so to speak. the Kydex could then , also do it's secondary job of holding the knife where the scales/meet the blade end.

Think of it as inserting a handcrafted kydex funnel into the Nylon sheath.

??possible???

Whoa!! nice to see a new BK7, I almost forgot how mine looked like when it was new. Sure beat the crap out op mine and still beating it. Very nice knife it is for sure!

I really like the handle, Alot of people say its too big and uncomfortable, but its perfect for my hand. And I havn't found the knife to be that big either, But for me a knife is for cutting and that only, unless its some horrible situation that I cant have my axe. Ill use the bk7 for every thing else, and small cutting goes to the SAK, then the pliers and serrated blade on the multitool are great for every thing between.

Thanks for the replies guys, and longbow I know what you mean, im starting to like the sheath. I've also "shrinked" mine like you did yours, as in lowered the belt loot, and brought up the top. Now im all good.

Until Fonly posted that he "Shrinked" his like you did I didn't even notice...I saw the Micarta Gips and wondered what the rubber bands were around the bottom. I didn't even think the pocket was big enough for anything other than a small stone.

I just found out an Altiods Tin will fit there and a bunch of stuff can fit in an Altoids tin.

So how did you go about lowering/securing the loop into the lowered position as that would make a BK7 waist carriable freindly.

Gear and Survival forums are the worse cause you can never have enough, Firearms you just get too many and forget what you have:rolleyes:

When you fold the top section down, it almost seems, to be made so it can be folded down. then you can either sew it in place, or a little bit of black tape can be used.

I did some small modifications on the handle of my BK7. It improves the grip and made I a very comfortable for a three finger chopping grip. (See the pictures/link in a other thread started by Fonly)

You really can chop, split and pound with the Beckers. Caring a axe is handy but if you are not planning of using it a axe is just a very heavy shelter/fire building tool. So IMO a axe next to a BK7, or larger knife in general, is overkill in weight. Go for a large blade or a axe and smaller knife!

Why carry a SAK and a multitool? The Leatherman is enough on its own. But I get the point…I carry a SAK on my belt and sometimes the Wave in my beg.

But don’t get me wrong if you like to use and carry a s***-load of tools and equipment….just do and have fun while doing that!

The bands on the bottom of sheath are made from a bicycle tube. Referred to as *ranger bands*, they come in handy for securing, connecting and bundling gear, as well as being a pretty good firestarter that gives off a lot of smoke.

I used paracord to secure the loop in the folded possition, by running it from the loop to the lower section of the sheath, folding it up and then secured with the bands. I didn't want it to be permanent and we can all use a little extra paracord in an emergency.

I like the way it carries when worn high on the waist. It's quiet and when worn cross draw for a left hander (I'm a right hander) just in front of where the right arm rests at my side, it makes the knife quickly accessable for my right hand draw.

There's been a lot written about the BK&T sheath kits, so lots of info is available online if you do a search.

I used to have a HD industrial grade 55 gal. drum liner folded and attached to the back of the sheath with ranger bands and will replace it when I get around to it.

I have an altoids tin w/gear and a bottle of iodine tabs in the pocket.

Some have placed small bits of gear under the handles of the Beckers and I suppose that it would come in handy. I just don't like putting all my eggs in one basket. Losing a knife is possible, but losing it's sheath while attached to a belt isn't as likely to happen.

Here's what's in the pouch.

Here's the Becker with my EDC.

Again Piet, It will allways come down to pesonal preference. I perosnaly hate using a knife for what its not made for, i.e. chopping, splitting and prying. even after the speach that becker gives on there site and some other ones, about troops needing a tool for light chopping prying and digging. after you get the package open and read the pampflit that comes with it, it says not to do everything the site says its was made for. Soo, For me its a knife, I cut with a knife, and that only, Unless Im in a situation where I cant have my axe, You'll never see me in the woods with out my axe. I just lash it to my pack and go. So I long site, I absalutly understand what you mean about weight, but personally it doesn't affect me. And like I said at the fisrt, it is allways going to be a personal preference.

Oh also, the reason I carry the multitool and a sak, is because the straight blade on the wave sucks, so I use that for its tools and pliers, but the sak is used for its 2 blades, they both get amazingly sharp and carry it for a while.
