woods bumming gloves

Sooo, I've gotten a pretty decent raise at work and am excited to spend some of my new extra money on some toys. One thing I've been wanting for a while is a decent pair of gloves for my bushcrafting/camping/hiking days. I know I would probably be fine with some plain old leather work gloves, but I live in Florida and it gets hot. I'd like a pair that I could wear most of the day without having my hands marinating in sweat. Something durable, but tactile enough to fit in my trigger guard and smaller manipulations that would be difficult with normal work gloves. I've been looking at a few pairs of Mechanix gloves that seem like they might fit the bill, and they don't break the bank either. Preferably something under 50 bucks or so. You guys have any suggestions? Thanks for any input

I'll have to recommend the Mechanix. I used a pair of the lightweights while deployed and they held up beautifully. Just remember they're synthetic leather so they will melt when they come in contact with something sufficiently hot... like the edge of a metal gate that's been cut with a torch.

well, I don't see myself encountering any molten metal out in the woods, but i'm not always great about leaving a good camp fire well enough alone. Thanks for the heads up.

I really like a good pair of deer skin driving gloves. They're always soft and when they break in they're awesome. Like a second skin.
I also like the mechanix gloves, or the Carhartt equivalent. I have a pair of framers gloves that I wear when I'm shooting in the winter. I forget who makes them, but I picked them up at Home Depot.
I just picked up a pair of Cow Hide drivers and they're terrible (but the price was right) maybe they will break in. I believe cow hide will last longer than deer skin. Pig skin is good and tough, but it takes a long time to break in and (for me) they're usually toast by that point. I do a lot of welding and cutting and so my gloves don't last a long time.

I have also been considering picking up a pair of The Dex by Carhartt. I found some at a Fred Meyer locally but they wanted $30 for them. I think I can find them online for around $20.

I am a contractor btw, so I really do use my gloves quite a bit. I've gone through about 4 pair in the past 4 months. When I was working as a ship fitter I'd go through a pair a week. And back then I did usually spring for the deerskin drivers. For general woods bumming I'd probably pick up a pair of well fitting deer skin gloves. They won't run you more than $20, and if you can try some on locally you can probably beat the price online.

One another note, another contractor I know wears nothing but cheap cotton gloves for work. They probably cost about $2 a pair, and they are machine washable. Another fellow I know wears nothing but fingerless rag wool gloves.

I buy the 3-pack of all leather gloves at Costco. They are reasonably priced, last a long time and are very tough. Great for all around bushwacking.

I hunt in Florida and like to wear cammo Mechanix gloves in warm weather. I have a nice pair of gloves I bought at Tractor Supply that are brown nylon with pigskin leather palms, I believe the brand name is Schmidt(?) that I picked up on sale for $15. TS has a good selection of work gloves; as Chris said, you can't beat a good pair of deerskin gloves.

I believe you are already on the right track with Mechanix. That is what I use and keep in my packs. I ride with them on the ole Fat Boy Lo, hunt with them when it is above 40F, and have used them in tactical shotgun, handgun, and carbine courses as well.
If I can be satisfied with them in Texas that is a good vote for your environment as well.

I am a cheapskate at heart but had a 50% True Value coupon and tried the Stihl 29.99 gloves- goatskin leather and mesh back- I REALLY like these. I can actually pic up screws with the gloves on. So far they are keepers.

I switched from leather batting gloves to the disposable Home Depot and Lowes brand throw aways.

I sweat like crazy and I have foudn these are the coolest to use, pack easy and offer just enough to be comfortable for every form of work but barb wire fencing. Disposable and great to keep in the pack, truck and just about anywhere. They do last. I used the same pair to put up 86 ft of cedar picked fence to include 4 gates, digging all the post and screwing in every single board. The tips of the fingers finally had a small split in them after 3 days of work. They dry very quickly in the sun and keep my hands cooler than any other glove I have tried. I've gone through the mechanix, camelbak, western deer skin, wilson batting and golfing gloves. These last the longest for the $ and are by far the most comfortable to wear.

I've been using both Mechanix and Iron Clad Framer's gloves; they have the booger (trigger) finger, middle finger and thumb exposed for better dexterity of handling smaller items, shooting or excavating that big'ol booger:D They aren't my choice for cold weather, but work well for most of the year down here in GA. Do note that if you plan to work around fire, these gloves will melt; highly recommend a good pair of leather gloves for that...

My vote goes to deeskin also if you want good dexterity and a glove thats feels like a second skin. I always used them when i bird hunted mostly though, but i'm sure they would also work for your woods/outdoor needs too just fine.

Thank you guys for all the great suggestions. Seems like a lot of votes for the mechanix, but I like the idea of having some cheaper ones to keep in my truck and stash various places. I looked at some deerskin ones and I think those might be a possibility for what little winter we get, I worry that they might be a little warm to wear all day during the summer though. Thanks again

Wells Lamont all leather work gloves
Or for summer
Wells Lamont leather with mesh backing

Both are thinner plyable leather

I get them from Walmarts

Oh
I forgot to say they are cheap, and protect your hands just fine

These are my deer skin gloves. Definitely +100 on them. I love them.

They are well broken in, btw. :)

man, new gloves weren't even that high on my new gear priority list until this...If i'm not careful I'm gonna end up with like 6 new pairs of gloves and no money for other toys, heheh.

I get pretty warm and I like the harbor freight Roping gloves ,they hold up really well and fit perfectly .I have worn them working with shingles and whatnot and they wear like iron. I found I needed to rinse them out a few times and let them air dry before wearing them as they have a ton of yellow dye/tanning crap still in them from the manufacturer. Also Ironclad makes some decent gloves they sell them at home depot around here, they can be semi expensive and make sure to try them both on as they can have some irregularities.

I don't often wear gloves in the woods, but when I do I wear a pair of HexArmor gloves.

LOL I'm more of a St. Bernardus guy when I have beer. :D I knew a bank owner from Chile who was like the Most Interesting Man In The World but older. And also real. Cool guy.

I use mechanix gloves from walmart. I like how they fit and that I have high dexterity with them on. What I don't like is that I feel like if my knife or axe slips, they gloves would do nothing to protect me from a cut. They just seem so thin.

Great for handling things but no protection offered. Am I knot using the same mechanix as you guys? I haven't switched to leather types because they kill dexterity for me.
