Ok.. I was leaning towards the Skinny ASH1.... then, this arrived:

Yeah... thats a FAT ASH1 (CG w/Doublecut finish). Now my mind is all a blur. Can one survive in the wild wilderness with a tiny knife like a Skinny ASH1????

I am curious what you guys/gals really like for say a little hike in the woods.... a little camping with the kiddies..... a little backpacking overnight for a few days. The CG FATTIE is a bit thick.... but man!!! What a knife!

:)

i suppose that would depend on how much other stuff you were carrying. i'd much rather go for something longer and lighter

FSH.....or SARs LE. It would depend if I am camping or hiking. The FSH is a better hiking knife where the SARs is a great outdoor EDC blade. Oh and then there is the NMSFNO....

Yeah I am kinda thinking the FSH or HH might be the way to go.... I cant have too many... the wifey gets jealous! lol

I generally take a CG FBM and an AD. If only one can go, I take either my Skinny ASH or NMSFNO, unless I am hunting small game, then I take the Cultie. The Tank Buster will be the one once I get it because it will be satin and choilless.

Obviously, opinions will vary. I know there are some fanatical FATTY lovers here. But, I don't generally care for much over 0.25" thick for a user or to "Carry".

My FSH with full flat grind is at 0.27. I consider it an awesome knife that balances well, but still quite heavy for carry IMO. However, the FSH is a chopper and benefits from the thick blade and extra weight. Carrying a good chopper with weight vs. the benefits of weight associated with a good chopper is a given compromise IMO.

However, IMO, the ASH is NOT a chopper and I don't need a 6.4" bladed knife to be so thick. If I plan to pry a lot of boulders, then maybe, but I really don't. So, I consider it excess and unneeded weight that secondarily slightly reduces cutting performance. - At least the CG ASH1 is full height grind which helps.

But, to me, the whole advantage of INFI is being able to have the toughness in a smaller reasonable sized package. - HECK YES, I think the Skinny ASH is PLENTY capable for survival purposes.

Can you break a Skinny ASH? - most likely if you try hard enough. INFI has been broken before. But, it is still VERY hard to break at 0.1875" thick x 6.4" long blade. And the Skinny ASH is about 6 ounces lighter than the CG. For what the ASH is, it is a no brainer to me. But, I assure you some will have different opinions. Fair enough.

Personally, I think "Certain" "Fatties" make better Queens and "drool on" knives. They are very impressive to look at and hold in the hand. But, not really many advantages in the field (in most cases including the ASH's IMO). However, I do consider the excess weight for carrying contrary to any minor benefits in thickness.

The extra 6 ounces will help the CG chop better compared to the Skinny. But, it really isn't a great chopper anyway. I own the Skinny.

But, in regards to your question: "What's your favorite?" - The Skinny ASH is good. But, I prefer:

Large chopper: Battle Rat, FSH, M9LE and NMSFNO - ALL GREAT knives!!! (that I would "Consider" for carry, but really don't)

Medium Camp: SARSquatch and Camp Tramp (largest I really ever want to carry - Both EXCELLENT knives IMO!)

Medium Utility: SJTAC (modified thumb ramp), RMD (both often carried)

Small Carry: (Lot's of good choices - my favorite and most often carried size) - Vex is quite nice, Bog Dog, SS4, HRLM (modified choil). - I look forward to a SHBA without choil and an AD without choil some day. My SAR5 has GREAT potential IMO - I just need to do some handle mods including reducing length, height and weight of handle.

.

For the all-purpose, full-up camping trip, I like something truly substantial ... perhaps something in a Battle Mistress. Often, a nice SHBM. Failing that, an FBM or NMFBM will do nicely.

For those lighter trips, I like something in a BA or Badger Attack. Preferably a solid BA-III or maybe an ABA/ABA-LE. These EDC-sized Busses are perfection (to me).

Of course, I'm flighty. I've used GWs, Culties, ADs (definitely) and many other for this purpose.

And those are just the Busses.

If weight is an issue,,,,,,,,,,, BM-E ,,,, all the way. Excellent chopper,,,,a lot longer than the FatAsh,,,,, and 1/2 the weight.

BTW: ,,,,,,,,,, there's no such thing as camping/backpacking with one blade!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For a smaller midsize ,,,,,,,, SHSJ's or a EURO-4 ,,,,,,, or the good ole SFNO LE ...........

+1

I can't seem to grasp the "ONE" knife concept either.

Even on my lightest hiking trips without a pack, I generally at least have a small fixed and a folder.

Longer and deeper into the woods and I generally add a mid-sized knife to my small fixed and may or may not keep the folder.

So, generally a two knife minimum for me.

If just hiking within a mile or two of my house, I generally just carry a 3.5" to 4.25" folder OR a small fixed blade - sometimes both.

But, even day to day EDC typically includes 2 folders for me.

Size of folder and which pocket varies depending on clothing.

.

I wish I had room for a folder! I have several REALLY nice ones, ones I love... but one pocket is for keys and the other for my S&W 442 or 340PD (shhhhh don't tell anyone!). So... I carry a Busse BAD in a BADASS sheath every day, for cuttin stuff.

If only one blade, it's a MOFO for me, it's the best all-arounder.

For a 2-blade scenario, a long light chopper (BM-e or Rat daddy :) ) and a Utility / Skinner (Mean Street or such...)

The Skinny Ash is a great all around hiking and camp knife, not to heavy and still big enough to handle most everything, i live in the woods and use mine all the time.

Yeppers,,,,,,,,,,,, for smaller tasks,,, and specifically slicing,,,,,can't beat a BAD ,,,,,,,,, especially a blue one ,,,, lol

Well.... whatever you have to do and whatever works for you.

I would think you guys in Minnesota could carry all kinds of stuff with lots of pockets and belt sheaths all covered with tons of jackets and clothing almost all year. ... freakin' cold up there. :barf:
On the other hand, it is FREAKIN' hot down here in Texas lately. Most of the last week has been around 102 - 108 range. :barf: ....

I would sure like some highs around 70 - 85 and lows around 55 - 65.

Anyway, I am not sure I understand why you Minnesotans only have two pockets. - I generally have 4 pockets. ;)

If wearing shorts, jeans or casual pants, I generally carry a 3.5" to 4.0" folder in my right rear pocket (right handed).

I try to keep my keys carried to a reasonable level and have actually ground off large amounts of the key heads on a couple rarely used keys to keep size and weight down in my pockets. I have even redrilled the holes in some of them to shorten as well. I keep my car key on it's own remote fob and other keys with mini flashlight on another. I always carry keys in front right pocket and I generally have one of two folders in that front right pocket with my keys. My current favorite rotation is my modified Benchmade 707 Sequal. Sort of my smaller front pocket companion to one of my favorite rear pocket larger folder my (modified) 710 in M2. I ground the top ramp off of both the 707 and 710 and made subtle handle fitting mods. The ramp didn't work for me.
My other front pocket favorite is my cut down Leek. I cut the handle and blade down to 3.25" closed. I find about that 3.25" closed is about what I can tolerate in my front pocket.

In shorts and dress pants, I generally carry my wallet and a Swiss Army Executive in my front left pocket. In jeans, I generally put my wallet in right rear pocket with my large folder.

I pretty much never use my left rear pocket unless I have some notes or receipts or something.

I have a 360PD, but don't carry it much. I need a LOT more practice with it..... or something. I am VERY accurate with a bunch of my pistols including a fair number of "smaller" autos like my Kahr P40, Glock 27 with pinky extension, Kimber Ultra CDP, and others, but I can't hit squat to my liking with the 360 snubbie - ESPECIALLY with .357 in that little Ti/Sc. The little thing is a bugger to control. Not exactly friendly with .38 +P either. Honestly, I don't like shooting it. But, it is very light.... I guess it might be too much to ask for something that is equally light, carries well AND I can shoot well.

Anyway, if carrying a pistol in "pocket", it would have to go in the front right for me and that would change things out of my system. I would probably just use a belt holster and a loose shirt.

I would LOVE the AD/BAD if it didn't have that choil. The choild RUINS it for me. :( I tried twice and couldn't tolerate the choil. Otherwise, I love the blade shape and handle feel. The Talon Hole could be slightly better, smaller or even gone on the AD IMO.

My fav?

Chopweiler

or

fat ASH

of course, I always keep a smaller knife, too.

like a GW

or

Swamp Warden
