MODS – PLEASE DELETE OR MOVE IF NOT IN THE BEST PLACE

Howdy All. I have learned a lot from the forums and enjoy reading, but don’t often have anything intelligent to post:o. Wanted to contribute in a small way and offer this little woods bumming kit to someone who could use it. You all probably don’t need it, but perhaps you know someone that you would like to give it to. Or if you want if for yourself, that’s cool too. I would only ask that, if possible sometime down the road, you give us some feedback on how it has been used.

I put it together from extra stuff I had around. Serviceable stuff, mostly new or gently used, not top shelf. Meant to be a smaller kit, not a lot of free space, could use a few additions (ie water purif tabs, bic lighter, tinder, spare batteries, 1st aid/meds, etc.)

Rules: 1) Please post additions you suggest the new owner might make, keeping in mind cost/size, and what is already available in the kit. 2) Also indicate whether you are “in” for the drawing. I will let this run for a while depending on interest and then draw a random number – if your post number matches, I’ll send the kit to you. 3) Sorry, USA only. I know there have been a lot of “gear list” threads, so wanted to try something a little different.

Hope to learn from your responses. Thanks in advance.
Peace
Out
Fred

I am not in for the draw ..
But Id suggest cramming in a couple emergency blankets .
I suggest 2 of them because it is my experience that one is usually not enough . ( I dont regularly have emergencies where I use them , but when I have had to , the extra would have been soooooo handy , first at scene , car crash , 2 people in shock with shivers , one blanket ... )

+ 1 on the emergency blanket(s).

PJ cotton balls and/or 2 or 3 tampons. Paracord; at least 25 feet, 50 would be better, space permitting.

I'm in for the drawing.

Thanks.

I agree with the other guys about cordage and space blankets. I would also add storm matches to the match safe, and a few other odds and ends to the FAK.

Im in for the drawing.

ETA: I would also add some sort of water treatment tabs and metal cup/pot if possible.

About the space blanket, I'd use the Adventure Medical Kits blankets. Not expensive, and definitely better than the dollar mylar ones.

Not in for the drawing.

Count me in for the drawing.

Maybe add a few feet of jute twine for additional tinder and cordage, a small piece of sandpaper for sharpening, some heavy duty aluminum foil, bullion cubes, and a couple of those Starbucks Via coffee packets.

1) 25 feet paracord, space blankets, bic mini lighter, 1-2 powerbar (protein), water purification either tablets or dropper with bleach, $20-50 in cash and $1 in change, extra photo ID, Mora attached to pack somehow, Maybe eventually transport it into a maxedition butt-pack or shoulder bag for more room.
2) I am in
3) No need to ship if you would like I live in that area as well. Maybe a short day hike would be in order.

I'm in for the drawing. very cool of you and a nice little kit you put together for the give away.

it's pretty well thought out. definitely go with a amk 2 person heat sheet. its 5.50 and much better quality and has some survival tips on it which may help someone in a pinch when they aren't thinking that well, definitely cordage 550 or jute would work well, one of the food bars (like a mainstay 2k calories), in top of the match safe stuff a cotton ball or 2, maybe skip the thread all together and just use fishing line. it and dental floss were the only things that actually worked for me over in iraq. definitely water purification tabs. and a big one for me a space pen of sort (something small like the county comm pico pen) and a couple sheets of write in the rain paper.

again thanks for the opportunity sir.

I agree with everyone's add ons. Here is a suggestion what about using a gyot design backpacker bottle? It's metal so u can boil water etc and don't need a mess kit, also what about up grading your quart sized bags to gallon then u could collect water in them then transfer it to the bottle for boiling, and you could also pack your food like oatmeal cream of wheat etc it them and stash them and ur sport in the bottle to make space. Also iam in for drawing thanks , and good ideas everyone

Howdy all. Lots of good suggestions to make it better. The kit was put together with stuff I already had available; recently lost job so no spare cash to upgrade - that will be up to the new owner. The water bottle is metal for emergency water boiling, not the best but could do. I will add a bit of jute for extra tinder and a couple of 6ft nylon bootlaces I have around to give a small bit of cordage, also a bit of sandpaper in the repair tin. PLEASE DO keep the suggestions coming, that is the hoped for learning aspect of the exercise!

Thinking I will let this run until Monday night to let weekend folks a chance to get involved. Thanks for all the great ideas; all others welcome. Stay tuned!

This is very generous of you newadventure! Thank you! It looks like most everything has already been covered but I would suggest some kind of DEET spray. Mosquitoes drive me absolutely crazy. Some would consider it a comfort item but I feel it's a necessity.
I'm in.

Great giveaway, newadventure! That looks like a great basic kit.

Good luck to all the entrants.

This is great. I am in!

This would be great for younger brother, who is just starting to want to tag along with me in the woods. I am teaching the skills I have learned and he has wanted to put together a small hiking kit.

As far as additions go, add a few fire straws, some water purifier tablets, some tin foil (about 2 ft) for cooking, 50 ft of paracord sling for the water bottle and a few butterfly sutures. Wrap a few ranger bands around things and call it good.

Howdy all. Will draw the winning number Monday evening, so if you still want to get in, please do so. Hope everyone had a good weekend and got some time outdoors!
Fred

Great idea, I'm in, thanks for the chance. Small vic, fishing line, cordage. Otherwise, great little kit. Hope I win it, but good luck to everyone.

Howdy. My son drew #10 first. While it certainly would have been easiest shipping, winning your own drawing was not exactly the intended outcome :D. He next selected #7 ... so looks like nate1714 is the winner. My son also selected selected a backup number which will be used if the winner drops out for some reason.

Nate, please email me at fporzelt (at) comcast (dot) net and we'll figure out the best way to get it to you. Thanks to everyone who posted for your input and suggestions - a lot of good ones!
Fred
