What is your favorite wheel gun for woods carry? Here is mine

Smith and Wesson Model 66 .357
4" barrel with fixed sights. Cylinder Slide Extreme duty rear
Bead-blasted stainless finish
Trigger Job
Custom Black Canvas Micarta Grips by Greg Haugh
Custom work done by JoJos Gunworks of Southington, CT

Check her out!

no wheel guns sorry...not by choice though just by virtue of being a NYC resident, currently however my favorite woods gun is my henry lefveraction youth rifle .22lr short/light, high capacity handles a bunch of different ammo 22s/l/lr...come hunting season however I'll probably switch over to my remington 20guage double barrel....Nice piece though that looks sweet.

It would probably be one of these two but if I had to choose just one it would be the GP-100

sorry for the crappy pics

That's a great looking Smith .357, and it's a good choice! But that Ruger .357 GP-100 and the Ruger .45 Vaquero (?) are great guns, too. If I had to choose just one for my own use it would probably be a Ruger Single-Six .22 Magnum (or one with dual cylinders so I could use .22 LR or Magnum rounds), unless defense against large animals was a serious consideration. It that was the case I'd probably choose my Ruger .22 Bearcat carried crossdraw for fun, and my Ruger .45 "crossbreed" which is a short .45 Blackhawk with a steel Bisley grip frame, hammer, and trigger on it. I wanted a short .45 Bisley, but Ruger doesn't make them, or didn't when I last looked. I put my leftover parts together to make a .41 Blackhawk, then traded that for a really long barreled (8.375") Smith .22 Magnum. :D

ruger gp 100 has been my woods gun for about 6 years....never saw a need to get any different..besides it digest any .357 round i pit in it and with iron sight is more accuarate than any other pistol i own..

It changes every trip but my favorties are a Tarus .38, and a Ruger Security Six.

great looking gun kev... no wheel guns here either...i usually carry a knife or 2 and one of my longbows...:D

As An NJ resident, I can only carry when I am out of my home state but when I do I usually carry my SW model 60 .38, loaded with +p's. I have the .357 version with the 3 inch barrel on order Im hoping to get it buy July.

PS: I love that finish on the Smith, I would love to do that to my New Model 60 when it comes in.

If I had to live in a handgun-less situation, then for a general purpose woodsgun, I'd consider a Marlin or Winchester lever action in .357, possibly .44.

It doesn't look "evil" ("hey, is that a John Wayne gun?") , is fun to shoot and holds 9 or 10 rds or more of serious ammunition.

Call it a "Stealth Assault Rifle" :D

.

I have a 1917 S&W 45acp that has been reworked with adj sights and nice 5" barrel and I have made an 45 Long Colt cylinder for it also. If its just plinking time its my SW mod18 in 22.

I've been interested in getting a handgun for a number of years but my financial situation has not allowed it. I'm much more interested in revolvers than autos for some reason that I can't fully explain. When I do finally get one it will probably be a .357 with a 4 inch barrel. S&W, Ruger and Taurus are the three manufacturers I like. I love everyone else's pics. A lot of nice looking pieces.

Edit: I'd also like to get a .22 for target shooting and plinking. Easier on my hands, and less expensive to shoot.

Does one need a special permit to tote a rifle or a shotgun in the woods, I wonder?

In Maine that would be considered prima facie evidence of hunting, which gives a warden probable cause to stop you in order to determine whether any laws are being broken. Most of the wardens I know would want a pretty solid explanation if you weren't actively engaged in or travelling to or from target shooting, didn't have a hunting license, it was on a Sunday, or you were stopped at night. Here it is also illegal to have a loaded firearm in a vehicle, with the exception of handguns in the posession of concealed weapons permit holders. Oh, and as to the original question on this thread, a Harrington&Richardson model 929 in .22 lr. I'd like to upgrade to the single action Ruger .22/.22 mag someday.

Here are my favorites, in no particular order:

I am a big fan of revolvers I have a Ruger Bisley and a Birdshead Vaquero customized by Jim Stroh at Alpha precision. Both are in 45 colt which I load for and is one hell of a great cartridge, over a 100 years old or not.

My current favorite however is my Dad's Smith model 13-3 in 357, it is a dream to carry and the fixed sights are perfectly regulated. He has owned it for years and I have been trying to talk him out of it for years. I recently bought him a model 37 airweight and he gave me his 13 for my birthday. I have never liked autos, I have owned more than a few and they always get sold or traded, big bore revolvers are the only way to fly.

My woods gun changes with my moods and activity. If I'm out by myself, I tend to carry a larger caliber. But with other people it is often a 22 as we'll do some plinking at some point. I sometimes tote a Model 57 Smith Mountain Gun (41 magnum) because it shoots great. Others include a 3" Ruger GP100 357, 6" Colt Trooper Mark III 357, a Ruger Mark II 22LR with 5.5" bull barrel, or a Smith Model 18 (22LR). The Model 18 is relatively new to me and I still need a good holster. But the Uncle Mike's works okay for the time being. It is so nice, I hate to shoot it which probably means it will become a safe queen. Guess I need to pick up a new Smith 617 or a little 317 to play around with.

I also don't carry a handgun , My woods loafer is a Marlin 1894 ;)
in .44 mag. It has the saddle ring and I recently fell in love with a saddle ring sling for it  ( I found it here http://www.castbullet.com/srsling.htm )
