I have been wanting a GOOD pipe-hawk for a couple of years now. About a year ago this guy at the local funshow had some, along with some knives, that he personally made. I didn't buy one and could've kicked myself for not doing so considering that that was the first and last time I saw him. Until today :D .

I believe he said he made them out of 52100 steel. He said it was a ball-bearing(spl?) steel, similar to D2. Does that sound about right? It has a 18" tiger-stripe maple handle, common for the time period. It's functional and solid as a rock. He said he based it off of ones that "Marvin David Palmaroy"(spl?) brought or had brought over here from England 2-3 hundred years ago, I think that's what he said. I'm a "less is more" type of person so I could do without the frillies on the handle but all in all I am VERY pleased. :D

His name is Larry Dula, from Lenior, NC.

You can see the temper-line pretty good in this pic.

I love "whoo hoo I got it " threads because they always help get me excited
when some of that xmas morning new toy joy is infectious. You have a very nice hawk there. I am from the less is more school myself and I think that hawk is still subtle enough not to detract. If it is not to rude ,what price range would a pipehawk with that nice a head go for? Even a good quality plain headed pike would be cool.

I doubt 52100 could be considered close to D2. Apart from that 52100 is good steel for that kind application and would be far better than D2 for that (there are drawbacks, but mostly for the maker).
