Finally a bale that will work.
After MANY disappointments I can now make these things! :D
Far right is an original CAMCO as a pattern.
2 1/2" of 3/32 steel rod.

The absolute HARDEST part is punching the hole.
Ugh, the wire loses heat SO fast, before the awl can push through.

Wow! I assumed you had hammered flat & drilled. Punching is another level.
What SS are you using?
 
It's carbon steel, polished.
Drilling just tears the metal and it breaks.
Punching produces a nice even hole without removing metal.
