Hey guys! I have a short story to tell. Granted, I could fit all of this into one sentence, but that's like just watching the last 5 minutes of a great film. Here we go!

OK, it was time for another sebenza. I've owned many in the past but they were all stonewash/plain handle. As of now I have only one small regular (new thumb ridges), which I love. I searched many places online and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. So, I called CRK looking to have put together a small regular seb with a plain handle and damascus blade. Now, why a plain handle? Many reasons: I like the way the bead blast finish wears, wood or a graphic costs more and takes more time, I want it to be an EDC user and not worry about what's on the handle, and I've never seen a CRK knife with a damascus blade and plain handle.

Anyway, Heather informed me that because they're soo far behind with procuring their materials (especially damascus steel) that it would take nine months to a year for what I wanted. Of course any "custom" CRK is worth that kind of wait, but just in case I asked if they had anything already available; Heather went to get Anne and find out. Anne got on the phone and informed me they had two small classic blades unassigned to a handle, one high contrast fireball pattern and one high contrast ladder pattern, both with fine ridges.

I remembered someone here in the forums showing me a pic of their custom ordered large classic seb with fireball damascus and buffalo horn inlays; that was a really gorgeous knife! So, with much excitement, I decided to take the available fireball pattern blade. To it I added a plain classic handle and double silver thumblugs with a silver spacer. To top it off it should be here in six to eight weeks, right in time for Christmas I hope!
Now tell me, what other production knife company can do that for you?

I'm soo excited about my first "custom" CRK that I had share every detail with you guys, hehe.

My only concern is that on Devin Thomas' website it seems that the high contrast damascus is intened for etching or blueing, and since it's a combination of 1095 and nickel I don't think it's stainless. Do you guys think it will be ok as is?

Attached is a pic of what inspired me. If you are the owner of this knife please remind me of the fact, and let me know which damascus steel it is (stainless, high contrast, or high carbon) . Thanks!

I can't comment on the blade and rusting, but I bet it's going to be one fine looking knife! :)

Hey Jedi,

That's one nice looking knife that inspired you... :D

Yeah, it's mine. And still my EDC. I got lucky like you when requesting a stainless Damascus, the factory has the fireball in stock along with the buffalo horn. You may be luckier then you think. I have another Seb on order with the same materials but in a small classic. One to match my large. I was quoted a year.

Are you sure the Damascus you are getting is stainless? I'm guessing it's probably straight B&W fireball. Which is fine, it's not only meant for etching. It will work great as a user. Just be mindful of the high carbon content and keep the fingerprints off and oil it when not in use. It will give you years of great service. Post a pic when it arrives.

they do? when did you order? Anne said there's no more buffalo horn in right now and Heather said all the damascus was getting scarce. They may have the stainless fireball in stock, and they may get more buffalo horn, but if I wanted one made with both those I'm sure I'd end up with that one year quote as well.

I went with what they had, being the small classic blade of High Contrast fireball damascus, I didn't say stainless. It's made with 1095 and Nickle, so I'm wondering it's edge and rust properties.

BTW blackend, if you ever decide to give up that one or the one you have on order, please consider me first! ;)

He was asking whether or not it was stainless. The answer is no. It will hold up just fine though, it will cut well, and hold an edge just fine, just make sure your sharpening skills are up to par before you attempt to sharpen it, so you don't scratch it up (or just send it to Chris Reeve for a resharpening). I live in a dry climate, but my knife with firestorm (another Devin Thomas patter, which I have in 1095 and nickel), has seen little maintanence even though it has seen some carrying and mild use, and I have had no trouble at all with rust, even though it often just sits in drawer and gets dirty. If you keep it clean and dry, you shouldn't have any trouble with rust.

By the way, B&W just means it isn't blued, it has nothing to do with being stainless or carbon, other than the fact the stainless can't be blued. :)

Ahhh, thanks very much Larrin! :)

I forgot to get a price quote for my knife! Before I call to ask, can anyone give me a guesstimate?

The damascus blade is around $200 more. If you opt to get duel thumb studs, another $31.50. So the knife is going to cost around 6 bills I'm guessing. Give or take some.

BTW, sorry for the grammer error. I was telling a story of a past experience and said (has) instead of (had). I don't think there is any stainless Damascus available for immediate delivery, or my knife would probably be about finished. It's been on order for a while. :(
