Hey guys- I'm looking for a good pair of wool mittens to pair with some shell mittens. Bulk isn't an issue, I need warmth more than dexterity; these would be mainly for pulling on if my fingers start to go numb on winter hikes. Any suggestions?

Traditionally, the best were Dachstein. However, I don't know where they are available these days. www.campmor.com sells some wool mittens of other brand.

army surplus wool mittens. Around $4 a pair, very well made and they keep you warm even when wet.

i got the CDN Forces ones.

Esav pinned it, you'll find alot if you search by design, and probably save some coin.

Ortovox Gronland are decent, not too pricy, I've taken to wearing fingertip-less gloves inside of them. I hate the lack of dexterity personally, but GREAT for long hikes where you need to just use your arms and keep your balance.

They make you question the need for some of the new hi-tech materials.

Googling boiled wool mittens turns up nil :( Lots of talk about how awesome they are, but nobody who is selling them. Maybe army surplus is the way to go...

Read some of the articles, it turns up all you need to know in the first 3 pages.

problem solved! just found some ortovox gronland mitts, though they are out of stock until October 9th

Why not get wool gloves to wear inside of leather "chopper style mitts?" You have both the dexterity if you need it plus the ruggedness of the leather if need be.

Good idea. I like wool gloves with no tips. the leather would work for me.

I would second the Woolpower mentioned above, and they have fingerless gloves as well. I got mine from the same vendor mtwarden provided, they're good folks.

I went through this last winter, and found the various mitten, liner glove combinations to be very versatile depending on conditions. I ended up with leather chopper mitts which I can use with a very thin glove liner if needed...or the wool mittens with or without a windproof shell. Without the shell the wool breathes nicely and blocks a fair amount of the wind, this kept my hands from getting too sweaty when on the move. There are lots of options depending on whether you're generating heat or trying to conserve it.
