I just received a new Filson catalog. I own and use a lot of their clothing. In it is a wool t-shirt. Never saw one of these before. It is Merino, so should'nt itch, and is machine washable. Anyone try one of these? Price is stiff at $85.

Supposedly, merino wool is very good. I don't own any, but you could probably shop around and find them cheaper. I received the same Filson's catalog, I like their stuff, but as you say the prices are stiff. I bought one of their packer hats 15 years ago, it's great. I'm saving up to get a "tin cloth" jacket. :D

Unfortunately a wool tshirt is not worth that much. I'd try and find it cheaper if you can. Otherwise I believe that it's a great outdoors shirt. due to warmth retention and ability to perform wet.

I don't have any experience with Filson, but I have two merino wool long sleeve t-shirts from Royal Robbins. I got them from a local outdoor shop clearance sale. I love these shirts & wear them all the time. Warm, but not too hot. Cool enough not to sweat. When you do sweat, they don't stink. And they go in with the regular laundry (air dry). These make fantastic base layers... much better than the synthetic stuff I've tried.

I wouldn't pay $85 for one, though. (I'm kinda cheap.) Watch for them on clearance and snatch them up then.

Filson quality is outstanding but a google for "smartwool t-shirt" offered a few at 1/2 the cost.

Keep an eye on Steep & Cheap. They often have Icebreaker or Smartwool items come up for really good prices. I have seen tee shirts come up but haven't jumped.

Coldwood,

I have a tin packer. One tough SOB, but takes time to break in. I also have the duster, which I like due to the ankle length. As I said, I have a lot of Filson. I am wearing one of their wool vest as I type this, and throw a double Mac over it as it gets colder. I did not realize that any company offered wool t-shirts, nevermind more than one. Thanks to everyone.

I have a complete set of their Merino wool alaskan guide long underware top and bottom. That is the price I paid. They are excellent, far better made than most of the import stuff that sells for less.

However botachtactical.com has the woolrich elite series on closeout for $25 each piece right now. And it is good as well. Fantastic price.

I used to use wool but over time migrated to the synthetics such as Patagonia expedition weight zip mock turtle necks.

Merino wool is nice soft wool that doesn't itch. I would go with a known brand to avoid disappointement if you decide to get one.

Years back silk was supposedly the "holy grail" for the base layer, but I like the fleece best.

But be sure to read about Botach Tactical in the "Good, Bad, and Ugly Forum" before making a purchase.

A brand name for wool is a good recommendation. Paying extra for "machine wash" is worth it for convenience...I have a couple of merino polo's that are now sized as doll clothes after a trip through the wash.

Marino wool is great and worth the money (not sure about Filson's price though).

Great since you can wear it for a while and doesn't stink like the synthetic stuff. Also, if you're going to a place where people like to blow you up it won't burn to your skin like the synthetic.

Great piece of gear to have.

merino is amazing, but like others have said, no need to pay full price.

Sierratradingpost.com is good resource, but the best is steepandcheap.com. But with steepandcheap you have to keep your eye on it. They had a really nice merino shirt today for around $30.

I have a friend who purchased a bunch of the Smartwool stuff. Made in China and fell apart in no time at all.

The Filson is pricey, But it lasts for years and years. Plus it is made n the USA.

I have dealt with Botach tactical before with no problems at all. In fact their customer service folks went out of their way to answer my questions before the purchase. My only problem with the is they only ship UPS,and UPS's service sucks in this area. But that can't be put at Botacht's feet.

I got a 100% Merino wool sweater from a thrift shop for $10(Banana Republic). It was part of my halloween costume, but if I shed a few inches off my waist it would fit alright, though not great, but it'd work for a cold weather mid layer.

I know this isn't much help, but I was pretty stoked when I checked the tag on it. It also kept me reasonably warm while outside on Halloween.

I have one Smartwool and one by Ibex. Both are very comfortable in Southern California weather---pretty much year around. For backpacking they don't get stinky as fast as some synthetics and seem easier to hand wash on the trail.

I also bought some of the Smartwool briefs and they are very comfortable.
