Howdy all y'all,
I am interested in your opinions on wool T's and longjohns. I know SmartWool makes them, as does Filson. However, I being a cheap bastid, am looking for something quality but still reasonably priced. Kind of like how you can buy decent "moisture wicking" T-shirts for often half to a third of the price of the expensive big-boys like Under Armor and North Face etc.

I'd like to buy a half dozen or so wool T-shirts and probably 2-3 pairs of long-johns, but don't want to break the bank. Anybody know of any good sources?

Thanks in advance,
Mongo

Mongo, Have you tried sierra trading post dot com, they usually have some pretty good deals.

STP is a great source.

also i have purchased Remington items from walmart (yeah yeah i know) but i needed some thermals (non cotton) bad. they work pretty well but you get what you pay for. if you take care of your stuff then i would spend the extra on the more name brands (mtn hardware, north face, patagonia, etc etc) that are known for quality and just take care of it. if you tear your stuff up go with the remington brands and other more affordable options you can find at a local retailer.

Icebreaker wool rules. It's expensive and worth every penny IMHO. Smartwool has served me pretty well but, Icebreaker is a little better.

Icebreaker is head and tails better than Smart wool. Generally, merino is not cheap. If you do find it cheap, unfortunately the quality seems to suffer exponentially....

True that, and merino wool is the ONLY wool material that I would(and do) wear against bare skin.

Terramar has some merino wool products, like their "Woolskins" long underwear.
STP has these, but make sure you're signed up for the dealflyer coupons.

While it's generally not too difficult to find cheap (but good) wool outerwear, I doubt very much you'll find good and cheap long johns or t-shirts. If they're cheap, they're going to itch and scratch.

There is a good reason for that. I don't know if it is still the case, but when I was selling Icebreaker at a previous job, they were buying 85% of the merino that came out of New Zealand and had the futures for something like 10 years worth of it. When you are doing that kind of volume, you always get the best stuff.

Ibex is good also, and I believe some of their stuff is USA made. I do not like their cuts however. Lots of their shirts are boxy and square vs fitted. On the flip side, i think that Icebreaker should fire their lead designer. Some of the crap they are selling is downright hideous to look at. I usually just stick with their 200 or 260 wt long sleeve base layer, and a few of their 150 weight T-Shirts. I also have a 340 weight hoody that I got from NZ that is my security blanket. Thats about it..
