Eh, so I was out doing some work honing my skills with batoning with a few different knives today, one of them being my Junglas. Everything was going well, until the tip of the Junglas contacted on some very hard granite ( I believe ) rock. There were no chips or burring on the edge, but what's nagging at me is the tip pretty much angled in such a way that it took the majority of the blow on the granite. I'm incredibly worried that there was some tip damage, but I can't really TELL. It still seems to pierce just fine, but do you think one bump ( forcible one at that ) into granite would do any real damage to the point? Again, it will still pierce, but I'm just being a worry-wart I think. Any takers? Think I'll be fine?

If there happened to be any real damage to the tip, would a ceramic rod be fine to take to it? Or would you recommend bringing it to a knife sharpener?
:(

Are you talking about the barely rounded tip? That will sharpen out in about 30 seconds.

no biggie, can barely notice it.these things will happen with use, dont worry about it.just sharpen it out.

That is nothing to worry about. A few passes on the stone and presto, it is all better...

It will still kill hogs

I kid you not, I'm still laughing. I saw those pictures... talk about a way to hype your blades! Make Cold Steel look like babies.

I don't have a sharpening stone on hand, just some old ceramic rods my father had. I'll see about getting some. Every thought about making it the Junglas' motto? "Junglas. It kills hogs."

Start with the sharpmaker, actually - waterstones are nice, but start with some "trial knives" first to get the technique worked out.

I just bought one of these...

http://www.amazon.com/Woodstock-D11...D2C9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294018483&sr=8-1

I've done whetstone sharpening, but they've never been my own stones. So, not familiar with the brands.

Was that a smart buy? Seemed like a decent deal. Should I also pick up a Sharpmaker for $40~?

I've never used a waterstone so I'm not the one to give advice on how to use that, but several folks seem to really like them. I've seen several threads on waterstones here recently, you might look back through recent threads here for them.

I do have a couple of sharpmakers, which I really like, but since you already ordered the waterstone, I'd try that one first before ordering anything else.

You are joking, right?

I sure hope so, wouldn't dream of ever sending a knife back for something so small... :P

Already straightened the tip out with a ceramic rod. She's back to full potential.

Now she has a bit of character behind it, even if the character is from negligence!

We really do need a sarcasm detector here.

It would never work.....the whole place is filled with sarcasm. It would just go off ALL the time. :D

BTW, I see you're in NW Ohio. It's too bad to see the temperatures headed down in the twenties again after that warm-up this week...

True, there is a LOT of sarcasm.

I disagree. I like the cold a lot more then the warm. ;) I rather be hit with a big snow storm.

I honestly fail to see what you are worried about. Its a knife, not an ornament.
