Looks like heartwood - I would hang hang it and go. There is a little more mass to work with at the swell than the first one.

You probably got a handle made from the heartwood portion of the tree. The sapwood is lighter. Sometimes you get a two-tone. I prefer the heartwood myself but it's personal preference. Strength is about equal.

Manufacture and Quality Control at the handle-making facility of (former) Wetterlings are definitely 'on the ball'. That's about as nicely grain-oriented piece of wood as you can get. Sapwood (the outer part of the tree that is still alive) is usually lighter in colour than heartwood (no longer living material that is obstructed by mineral deposits) and that's what you're comparing with those two handles.

the swell is the .... swell at the bottom of the handle. It's nice to have extra because if you had the desire to alter it, you've got some extra material to work with or, it just fits the hand and functions better being a little larger. As stated, your new handle is heartwood, which is perfectly suitable.

Handle looks very nice, but why are you replacing the old one? I know that Wetterlings charges a premium for them and the original looks like new.

I got i cheap and I wanted a longer handle. So I bought the scandinavian forest axe handle.
