So, my current quest for shorter Spydies has been partially satisfied with the acquisition of I shiny new Cricket (I opted for a PE one with the etched stainless handles. In brief;

Things I like;

It's a Spyderco;)

It's light,

VERY sharp and pointy,

Solid lock up (the best liner/frame lock I've ever laid hands on,)

Ball detent is positive, but not annoyingly so,

Phosphor bronze washers were a nice surprise,

Stop pin is adjustable,

Design fits the hand well,

It's cute as hell (chicks dig it!)

Things I'm not so wild about;

Thin metal isn't too comfy when gripped tightly,

Not too enthused about the first (upcoming,) sharpening session (I'd love to see a wharncliff cricket,)

Pocket clip seems to be off center (I'm sure it was intentional, but I'm anal about symmetry.)

All in all, I'm very pleased. This is sure to find a place in my EDC even when a smaller knife isn't required. Now, let's see about that Kopa. . .

My girlfriend has a cricket (courtesy of XD45), she loves it! If I were limited to smaller blades, it would be on my must have list.

I was impressed with the ergonomics of the cricket. it really locks in your hand for such a small knife.

the blade shape is great for most edc stuff. opening bags, mail, packaging, cutting string etc.

If you have a sharpmaker, the VG-10 blade sharpens up quickly on the corners of the rods, but you need to be careful to keep that tip nice and sharp. I use the edge of my strop to polish the edge.

as for a wharncliffe cricket, look towards the spin.

I have the Etched Cricket wrapped up in xmas paper awaiting to be given to me from my girlfriend. :]

Excited to add it to my collection and my secondary knife rotation.

Picked up an etched cricket recently. Great little knife. Only issue with mine is that the framelock doesn't engage completely if you open it slowly. It drops down behind the ball detent but not far enough to engage the back of the blade and lock. I have to give it an extra bit of force when I open it to make sure it locks solidly. Otherwise, very cool.

if the stop pin is adjustable, see if you can back it off a little, to give the blade a bit more room to move.

Yes, I discovered the adjustable stop pin on accident. It appears the pin is eccentric (drilled off-center,) a small turn will make a huge difference in where the lock engages.

I have a few SS Crickets. While they are thin and I like the frame lock, I think that they are too thin to use comfortably. Mine never gets carried. My girlfriend loves her pink FRN SE Cricket though (courtesy of Boxer93) and I ended up getting her mom a black FRN SE Cricket for Christmas 2 years ago. She carries it every single day and was paranoid about losing it when she used to travel for work.

I am much more fond of the FRN handled Crickets. It would be nice to see a new version with the frame lock and a G-10 scale on the non-clip side to give it some grip and a little more thickness.

Granted, I wouldn't want to cut all day with it, but for a small pocket knife or even watch pocket knife it cuts much bigger than its size. Can't really think of a knife that fits in a watch pocket that I would want to cut with a lot. The Cricket, however, will cut like a demon for the odd times you need to cut something.

I want a cricket too..sadface.

That curved blade is just too awesome.

I've been wanting one for about the past half decade, and I only just got mine. Just try to think of all the cool new variants that'll be available when you're ready to buy:thumbup:

If you want a Wharncliffe cricket then have a look at the Spyderco Spin. They are discontinued now so you might want to hurry.
I picked up 2 on ebay for 40 AUD each with free shipping.

:eek: I didn't know it was discontinued! I just got mine a couple weeks ago for $33; no wonder it was so cheap.

Excellent knife; it's my favorite "small knife." But as far as wharncliffe goes: is the definition of a wharncliffe a "blade with an edge whose tip-to-ricasso length forms a straight line?" If so, the Spin is not a true wharncliffe; there is a slight curvature to the edge.
