words

Blade play means blade movement from side-to-side or up and down while the knife is in the open position. Open your knife, grab the handle in one hand and the blade in the other and see if the blade wiggles when you try to move it side-to-side or up and down. Scale/liner flex is just when the scales(the G-10, CF, FRN, etc part of your handle) or liners flex. Sometimes if the liners and scales are weak enough to flex a certain way, it'll cause blade play by loosening the pivot area of the knife. A linerlock with good liners will generally have no up and down blade play, but many have side-to-side play. On the other hand, a back-lock may have side-to-side blade play or not, depending on how well it's made, but will almost always have a small amount of play up and down because of the way it locks up.
