First off I finally wore out my gray stones. Make sure you check these if you reprofile a lot of knives. Eventually they will not work right when they develop a low spot in the center. It made working with them imprecise. But that's to be expected. I also know they sell stones separately.

Also over time from exerting too much pressure with big blades, I developed a lot of play on the stones in their slots which actually changed the angle to greater than 40 degrees. Moving back and forth actually wore the slots and the stones no longer fit in them tightly. Finally yesterday the base cracked between the slots the two stones slide into on the 40 degree side. Not blaming spyderco, because I put too much pressure on the blades over a long period when sharpening. A bad habit. So I whipped down to my local gunshop and bought a new one. The difference was startling. Much more precise to work with.

The brown hones of the 204 will wear out faster than the white ones. Also, for those of you who like to sharpen on the edges of the brown hones, the crisp edge will become flattened over time and this reduces the effectiveness of sharpening serrations, where you need as crisp a point as possible to get inside the teeth of the serration pattern.

I have already worn out one set of brown hones on my 204 and already replaced them. However, I am still running on the original set of white hones that came with it. And I tend to use the white ones more than the brown.

Best thing to do is to check the surfaces of the hones against a flat surface such as a wooden cutting board or a countertop. Lay them flat on the surface and you can usually see signs of wear this way.

guess you will really be happy when the diamond rods are finally out.

The best way to clean your white rods is with a pencil eraser!!!!! i don't care how black and nasty they have gotten 10 seconds with a pencil eraser will have them like new. try it it works alot bteer than the commet and scrubby pad they recomend. doesn't do sqat on the brown ones though. I use benchstones but just a tip for you guys using the 204s

I've done the same thing on mine with quite a bit of hone play in the slots. Oh well I'm about to switch systems anyway, and just use the Sharpmaker for serrations
