hey guys,

one of the dudes at work asked me to get him a cheap knife for work.
hes the assets manager so hes constantly cutting tape and cardboard boxes open.
i was thinking of something around 2.15 to 3 inch plain blade, light and really easy to open, maybe a flipper.
he doesnt really like the liner lock system either.. says its too dangerous having your thumb in there where the blade is gonna close up on.
he was talking around $30 aussie so thats about $25 US i guess.

any ideas guys?

The best tape and cardboard cutter short of a Stanley utility knife is an Opinel. Due to the convex blade profile, it cuts cardboard even after it looses its edge.

Another great box cutter is the CRKT "Edgie", the self-sharpening blade is really suited for boxes and tape. It is also fairly non-threatening looking for the work environment. You can pick one up for 19.99 most places.

Byrd knives or one of the "Super Knives" that use disposable utility blades. Super Knife is a liner lock, but even if it closed, the not-sharp portion would hit your finger and you probably wouldn't be cut.

I agree with the Superknife recomendations, especially if he doesn't know how to sharpen a knife. The Sears Craftsman version is a lockback. If he does, the Byrd line is an excellent value.

I have a Kershaw Needs Work and for opening boxes, stripping insulation from electrical cables and cutting rubber hoses you cant beat it! I very much enjoy the Kershaw:D
