I am planning to do some work on an old M7 bayonet. I plan to replace the guard and maybe rework or replace the butt cap. I was wondering if someone might give me some advise on how to remove the existing butt cap without distroying it or the threaded tang. Your help would be greatly appreciated. UpDown.

I don't know what this kind of knife looks like so it is hard to say.
however a general rull of thumb is to line the jaws of the vice with a material softer than the but cap. some use copper some aluminium and some leather. If you hold the handle in the standard vice you may end up with a checkered pattern and scratches in the steel.

Sorry that is the best I can do with out having it in my hand to look at.

Edit
I had a re think. don't forget if the thread shears of you can always re tap it with a new thread and weld on a new thread to the tang.
If the but cap is the most important part to you the thread inside may have to be expendable. Just depends on the amount of work you want to do and the equipment on hand.

good luck

Thanks for the reply Reg Ellery. I should have been more descriptive in my original post. The M 7 bayonet has a butt cap that is screwed onto a treaded tang but then the threads are heavily peened to keep the cap in place. It would appear that to remove the cap over the peen would surely distroy the threads in the cap if not the tang also. The peen is in such a position that it seems it would be difficult to get a high speed grinder in and remove the peen sides, but this might be the only way to do it and save all parts involved. If anyone has any ideas or has experienced this before I would appreciated your help. Thanks UpDown.
