I watched a few vids and comments from here and was really thinking about getting the Work Sharp Field Sharpener for my BK2 (that is until I saw this video: https://youtu.be/X1L17OYjeSU. As painful as it was to watch and hear all that grating, it seemed to go against what I thought was correct technique for knife sharpening, it got me thinking and some questions:

1) Is the WS Field Sharpener good suited and a good companion for my BK2? (As in the video being a poor reflection)

2) I get the 20deg wedges guides, but the ceramic ones are 25deg, so any sharpening at 20 then moving on to 25 - would that have a more detrimental effect or be counter productive to my Becker 20deg edge? Or these meant for other knives only, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Hey jius, I've had good results using the WS Field Sharpener to resharpen/ restore edges on my tweeners, bk2 and even an ESEE 6. Being that your working surface is a bit slim and short, you'll have to put a bit more work in to get where you want to be. But you will get there.

Personally, I mostly use the diamond plates; if I want a more refined edge I'll switch to another platform. YMMV

Yah, the 'technique' demonstrated is not how I'd do it. ;)

1 - I don't have either a B2 or WSFS but it should work well enough for field use.

2 - following up with the 25° ceramic puts a 2nd bevel or micro bevel but only doing a few strokes is really more for removing any trace of a burr.

I own one of these and have used it on the BK2 a fair bit actually. These things are great I must say. I don't use the ceramic rod much at all, but no harm in using it, I mainly the fine side diamond and the leather strop. Great to throw in your bag. i don't sharpen like the dude in the video. Just a few passes either side does the trick.

Thanks for replies. Yeah I have never done it like the bloke in the video....seemed very weird and sounded horrible. But thanks for info - always a great source this forum!!! I saw Gideons video a week or so ago, seems so much better, but no one ever seemed to mention the guides on ceramics being different, or more why! I did see somewhere some one mention a second edition version wishlist with 20deg and 15deg guides on each sides for diamonds...especially if you can remove plates, but I guess it is what it is.

jius:
I think the 25° ceramic guide is for putting a secondary bevel on the edge. The ceramic rods are really just for refining the edge as they don't remove steel like the diamond plates do. I actually use the rods more than the plates, as usually when I'm out and about, all I really need to do is touch up an edge. Diamond plates are more for taking out dings and heavy duty sharpening. Besides, they're only guides.....so you can choose whatever angle you want and that is sufficient for the knife that you are sharpening. The big BK's are closer to 25° anyway (or 30°). To me, they're helpful...up to a point (lol); you still are going to have to develop a little feel for different knives you own and what works for each. But still, the WSFS is a kickass little tool, and mine is with me almost every day.

Aside, I didn't watch the videos, but the diamond plates are removable, which is how I would use them on a bigger blade like my BK2. YMMV.

I've had one of these for at least a year now, maybe longer. I keep it in my edc bag and use it when needed. I've been through a bunch of sharpeners over the years and have found this one works the best for me. I can get consistent razor sharp edges every time on any of my knives. Most of the time I can touch it up on the ceramic or even just polish it on the leather strop a majority of the time. Great sharpener. And even better once you get your technique down. Razor sharp!
