Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener Question

I've been hearing about the Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener for a good while now. I've been using a Spyderco Sharpmaker on my knives as my only sharpening system. It works, but I really need something that works better. What can I expect out of the Work Sharp as far as edge sharpness as well as edge geometry. I'm on the fence as to whether or not this thing is worth dropping the cash on.

I considered getting it when I saw it at a local gun show. It worked well but I felt like it was taking a lot of metal off the blade if you don't use it properly.

I've had it for about 2 years now and its great, I tend to reprofile to a convex with it then touch up with a strop rather than consistently sharpen with it.

Will the worksharp do any other edge than a convex? I've wondered about using a belt that seems to be unsupported for sharpening.

Are there additional grit belts other than the 80/220/6000 ones? I would assume that you could find after market belts that would fit it? Does anyone know the belt size that fits it? It would be nice to have some 400/600/800/12,000 grit belts to fit it as well.

My guess would that it depends on how extreme the recurve is. It could probably handle a slight recurve.
It's basically a miniature belt grinder after all.

very slight, by that I mean like on the Benchmade 710 (my main edc blade). It has a very slight recurve, but it is there.

I would guess it could handle the 710 because it is very slight. Just follow the recurve while sharpening and you should be five.
Make sure to practest on cheaper knives first to get a feel for it tho.

It works fine on recurves. I normally use an edge pro, but when I'm sharpening a recurve I use the work sharp. It's really easy and really fast. Just be careful not to round off your tips. I find it works better without the guides.

I agree, I have never used the guides on mine and I love it. I use it to reprofile the edges on machetes, reshape grips and convexing edges. The jump from the 220 belt to the 6000 is too big for me so I always keep an abrasive strop nearby.

Practice first with cheap knives or you may end up with a recurve you don't want.--KV
