I saw a contest in the W&SS forum that I thought would be fun to try using my RC 3. Y'all and your spoons! (CONTEST INSIDE)

I WILL be trying again.
I picked the pine because I plan to throw some olive oil or something like on it and I think that the blue stain will look cool.
So I heard olive oil was a BAD idea.
Maybe mineral oil?

olive oil will go rancid.
walnut oil is food safe and will cure to help seal the pores of the wood.

and now you have a shovel...
that's perfect, Tony! :D

Good luck, ST! Go for hickory maybe? thinner bowl/blade on the spoon maybe?

Good first effort! Since you're going to start over don't forget to put your user name and the date in the picture on a piece of paper or something...it's required for the contest.

I make spoons all the time when camping to pass the time, and b/c I enjoy doing it. the easiest way to make the bowl is put a small coal on the area you want the bowl to be and let it sit there blowing on it every so often to keep it burning hot enough. By moving a small coal around you can be very precise. I then use a smaller piece of wood to scrape out the scorched parts. If I am making it for myself then I just rinse it out. If someone else is gonna get it I sometimes uses a bit of dirt/sand and thumb / finger to rub more of the blackened area out as to not have a strong burnt taste. This does not bother me personally, but it does some. IMO there is way less opportunity for injury than carving it out, especially with a regular strait blade.

edit:
don't think I can attatch pictures so I put an example on my website:

Thanks for the tip Zachalope. I will have to try that.

It was a lot of fun Yote. I have tried two more times since.
The second attempt broke in the same place as the first and the third broke at the handle. I was rushing trying to get it done. All three could have worked if I'd have quit while I was ahead. Practice, practice.
