Working Grade Hunter

After some thought and speaking with a forum member I've come to the conclusion that making a "working grade" knife from time to time would be a great benefit. I can relax a little, try new things, and be reimbursed for materials and supplies.

This hunter is forged w2, 5.25" blade, 10" OAL, 416ss guard, linen micarta. This piece was intended as a prototype for a camp set. I didn't use the original handle design, but most likely will on the "real deal."

I'm not sure what makes this knife "working grade" other than the micarta handle and a Scotch Brite finish throughout...but that's what I'm calling it :D .

~These photos were taken before I reworked the handle, you can see a small flat spot on the butt. The butt is fully contoured now.

I'm considering making a full size version of this to take with me to Blade, but we'll see how that works out ;).

I like ALL the knives I see here and think that hunter, in particular is a terrific design. Proof that a working knife can and should be real good-looking as well as tough. What's the story on the little clip-point blade?

Roger,

The little bowie is going with me to Blade. I have been trying to finish it up for a week or two, I just can't decide on the handle...

Here's a better shot.

I like them all, but the camp best.

You should try a micarta guard, see if you like it.

Matt,

I would have to actually feel the hunter in my hand, to know whether the rear half of the handle "works".

I am looking forward to meeting you at the Blade Show, and checking out your steel.

Best,

P

Jupeee, he's finally doing contoured handles !!!! ;)

The knifes and blades are really looking really great  .

And as I said a while back those contoured grips will probably enhance the handling of your knifes quite a bit.

Looking forward to some pics of the finished knifes.

Regards Marcus

Lemme throw a suggestion out. How about some of that awesome stag?

Thanks guys!

Danbo, I was planning on stag at one point, the pieces I have are just too big. If I can find a few more I'll buy them, maybe one will fit ;). Some box elder might do the trick :).

Joss, I have used micarta as a guard. I like it. It's nice to have the ability to maintain a finish throughout a knife with just a rub down from a Scotch Brite pad.

Marcus, if you've never handled a Rob Hudson knife I suggest doing so. It will change your concept of sculpted handles.

These are really nice hunters and I don't think there's anything rough about them. When you said "working grade" I didn't expect a hand rubbed finish on the blade. Very clean !!! A synthetic handle could still be "presentation grade" especially with a nice finish.

BTW, you have my vote - I would make my knives exactly like that, everything from the blade shape, angles, handle shape and contours. Jason.

Those are some great lookin knives.......I love the one I got from Longrifle, he does fantastic work.
