Well i plan on working 2 months in the woods doing conservation work. I'm trying to figure out what style of knife sheath would be the best for my working out door environment. What do you guys think for my 3" fixed blade, a pouch style sheath? I think it'll be very secure, and have excellent retention. I'm thinking a style sheath similar to the falkniven knife leather sheaths. For all you experience outdoorsman what do you say, pouch style sheath? Drop down sheath with a open grip and thumb snap retention? Fill me in all.

I prefer a pouch style sheath myself. I hike, fish, and hunt. My preferred carry for a larger knife than what you described is actually a horizontal pouch sheath with a strap retention around the handle. I believe the leather has a wax treatment b/c it is very stiff. I love it! The knife even offers a reassuring click when inserted, almost like Kydex. I have been considering cutting the strap off since it takes a firm pull to unsheath the blade. I understand the horizontal/cross draw is not everyone's cup of tea. But for my bushcraft knife, I made a generic deep pouch sheath, verticle carry and I really like it too. A deep pouch coupled with a lanyard to draw the knife is a combo I trust. But that is just my experience and I'm no sheath maker.

I have never had an issue with a pouch sheath that is well wetformed - even if it isn't super deep.

I think this classic style has stayed in use for a reason. It is simple - and works. If I were you - I would have one made for your knife, with a weep hole (so that water can drain in case it is needed) and not think about it again.
