I'm looking for a working knife, preferably a folder about 4" closed. I need it mostly for construction, tree work(cutting ties, digging in bark,etc...). I was thinking a regular old Buck knife, 500,501, but thought a lighter weight with a clip might be better. I don't need an ultra sharp knife but one with a good edge and very sturdy, not to pointy. Suggestions? Thanks

Welcome to the forums, Emil!
The first knife that I thought of was the Spyderco Delica, although there are alot of good light weight folders to choose from - you might want to check out the Buck(www.buckknives.com), Cold Steel(www.coldsteel.com) Columbia River (www.crkt.com) and Syderco (www.spyderco.com) web sites to get an idea of what's avalible, and interests you. You can of course, post here when you do for some feedback.

Thanks Frank, I had considered the Delica but I think it might be too thin towards the tip. Other ideas? I'll check the other sites also. Thanks again

Frank's on the right track. The Griptilian would be ideal for treework. Very agressive cutting action and lightweight. Plus the axis lock is so nice to operate. You'll love it! :)

I always go with the cheapest option, especially for dirty work - check out the Meyerco Speedster at www.eknifeworks.com . At 12.99, it's great for what you need - thick blade, good lockback, clip, and not too pointy. If a clip is not that important, you may also be happy with a Gerber Gator, I heard they are very tough and very comfortable for prolonged use. (I have a Sppedster, and I can attest that it is not very comrotable to me - the handle has a pronounced curve)

The spyderco pro grip or pro venator should work very well for you.
You could also look into the Benchmade 710 or 705 axis lock knives.

If you want to go cheaper, Gerber's EZ-Out, Gator or Gator Mate should work for you. They all have very comfrtable handles. The EZ out has a clip, the other two you would probably want to carry in the pouch on your belt. If you look in the right place you can get them with ATS34 blades instead of 440A, it will take a better edge and stay sharp alot longer.

A Meyerco is definitely the way to go. They are a very underated knife. I have one that I've had for about 3 years and it'll do anything you ask of it. Plus while holding an edge real good they're also easy to sharpen. PLUS you can pick them up, NIB usually for under $30.00 and thats with G10 handles and titanium liners with an ATS-34 blade.

Just looked through spydercos site for the first time in a couple months. The black hawk and Renegade look like they might be good choices too. I didn't even know that spyderco had came out with them:confused:
The blackhawk is the size your looking for, and is a bowie blade style lockback with an adjustable pivot, and G10 handle with a clip. The bowie blade has a good sharp point, but it still should be a lot sturdier than a tip like a delica has.
The Renegade, is the same knife only bigger, 5" closed, 4" blade.

You can check them out at www.spyderco.com . The prices on there are only MSRP. Everyhting can be had much cheaper. I would reccomend either one stop knife shop, or discount knives.

WOW! I had no idea Spyderco had re-introduced the Renegade. This was an old model that was discontinued - I've heard it described (in it's original incarnation) as Spyderco's answer to the highly successful AFCK from Benchmade.

I don't know how much $ that you are looking to spend, but the Spyderco Wegner would also be a good choice for a sturdy folder.

The Meyerco Tactical made in Japan is a good choice, but be aware that Meyerco also has a "budget" version of the Blackie Collins Tactical under their Camp USA name made in China that is an absolute peice of crap.

The Benchmade Griptilian is a fine choice. It has a great 440C blade which takes a keen edge and holds it reasonably well, one hand opening feature, sturdy pocket clip, nearly indestructible steel reinforced Noryl GTX handle, and possibly the strongest lock available - the AXIS. Also, at it's price point, it won't break you and is easily replaceable if somehow you should lose it.

Mine has taken a couple of nasty falls, one from a ladder at around 12' onto tarvia and another from around 18' onto tile. You'd never know it by looking at it - there is absolutely no damage from either fall.

Man, When you ask a question on this forum you get a response! Thanks for the suggestions. One question, which blade type do you prefer on the Griptilian? Thanks!

Maybe thats the reason that I never hear anyone mention the Meyerco Tactical, everyones assuming that they're all made in China. Thats really a shame, although it is keeping the price down.

Emil... I don't understand why it has to be a folder? If its for working in trees, surely no one is going to scream about a small fixed blade with a 3-4" blade. One of these would be both cheaper and much stronger - especially for digging in bark - than any folder no matter what the lock!

The idea for the Renegade actually came out 6 months before the AFCK.
