They ar'nt slip joints but they are tradional knives in many places. I've always had a soft spot in my knife heart for the working knives of different places. Knives like the Opinel and Douk-Douk, the Okapi, sodbusters, navajas, Mecator "cat" knives from Germany. I have some old plain clasp knives from England and Irland.

Most have plain construction, and thin carbon steel blades that get wicked sharp. I have an old sodbuster from Freiderich Herder and one from Eye brand that off the strop are like strait razors.

Anyone else here into "ethnic" working folders?

hmmmm..."ethnic" working folders. Well Im into most any folders. As far as foreign knives, I really enjoy the Laguiole De L' Artisan folders, the Bundeswehr folders, and of course the SAK's.

Tough to beat an Opinel for shear cutting ability. I have not tried any of the others yet.

If you like sheer cutting ability, you owe it to yourself to try a Douk-Douk. The small one I keep tucked in my back pocket is like a pocket exacto-knife.

Been meaning to get a Douk-Douk and an Okapi for some time. I just never seem to get around to it. I will though.

okapi, are about on the same "par" as the old colonials, they work, but nothing to brag about (I use to have some).

jackknife, think we have the same interests :)
I'm into traditional carbon steel folders, nothing tactical, just functional and proven by time.
My actual EDC's: a "otter - mercator" or a "c.lüters & cie - ankermesser"
in the kitchen a opinel 12. Sometimes in the countryside a BIG "exposito - navaja".
They're all low priced, between 10€ - 50€, shave, and get this nice patina.
The "mercator" will come with me when I don't carry a bag for it's thiness, the "ankermesser" in the bag - love that sheepfoot blade for everyday use.

Hey there surfer-

I started carrying a Mercator about 40 years ago, and have like them ever since. I went through a stage for a while carrying more modern knives, but about 10 years ago I got rid of my other knives and went back to the old time stuff. I still carry a stockman or barlow or two, but love the mercators, opinels, and navajas.
