Working Micarta?

Can micarta be worked (shaped, sanded) essentially like wood? I'm looking for a durable material for scales. I'm aware that some materials, like G10, can be hazardous if not handled carefully...looking for suggestions for weatherproof materials that can be worked in a manner similar to wood.

Micarta can be worked like wood, but it is still hazardous to sand, ie, you will need a respirator.

Micarta does not contain glass or carbon fibers. It is better to use a respirator, but it won't kill you if you don't.

I would agree with Bill, but with the caveat that I haven;t worked it. I work with wood, and have been for many years. I wouldn't think Micarta would be any more hazadous than woodworking, or at least not much so. It contains cloth or paper and hardened epoxy. I use a respirator with wood and will do the same with Micarta (I'll be working some green Micarta soon with an ENZO kit )

G-10 on the other hand, is resin and glass fiber, or carbon, as Bill said.

Thanks. I wear a respirator working with wood after having some bad reactions to tropical hardwoods, so I'll just treat whichever I use the same way.
