Hey, Ive practiced grinding steel and this is my first actual knife. Of course Its far from complete but I have some questions to ask.

this is the basic design. I just want to throw on some wood slabs. Do you have any suggestions as to what would make the design better or more practical? Also in the second picture those deep scratches. I tried to sand it with 180 grit paper. Maybe I need a lower grit? I have ground the bevels very nice but do I need to sharpen it before heat treating or after?

Are there any tricks to heat treating 440c steel?

Thanks for all the help, I hope to one day make knives as great as you all ;)

be safe,

Looks like you need to get yourself a file, and draw file the bevels a bit more. Then sand until you get all the scratches completely out.

I think a more rounded finger groove would be more comfortable. Use a half round file.

Professionals heat treat stainless steel bro. You can send it out to be done, or you may want to start over with a good piece of carbon steel like O-1 or 1095 or something like that. You can heat treat carbon steel yourself. sharpening comes after everything is buttoned up and done. If you sharpen a knife beforehand, you'll get cut while working on it.

check this link out man. This will help you out.

thanks psycho, i'll get that half round file and work on the bevels more. its hard as hell to draw file. How the hell. The actual blade is angled like a V but the sides still have metal on them. damn thats difficult. lol. gonna check your link thanks bro.

you'll need to get yourself a big mill bastard file too. 10-12 inches. The big Nicholson brand, also a file card/cleaner (should be next to the files. looks like a hair brush). The shavings from the steel will collect in the file and scratch the hell out of your work. Clean the file often with the file card.

go here and buy yourself some supplies and some good O-1 tool steel.

Also, remember to drill the holes for the rivets before you heat treat it.

good luck

Keep working on it ,Hamza. The drop at the point needs to be rounded a bit.The finger groove could be a little rounder, too.
You are smart to start off with a small "Box Cutter" as a first project. Many try to make a big Bowie as a first knife - not a good place to start.
Glad you finally got this going. Keep it up.
