Working on the "patina" on my 5

I have been starting a lot of fires in the pit out back lately. My boys enjoy making hot coco over the coals. Anyway, I have pretty well run through all my small stuff lately, and today there was only some really wet stuff, some really green stuff, and some really big stuff.

The 5 may not be very long, but it is tough. I decided to work on the "patina" a little bit. I think these things look a lot better when they look used.

I started batoning on this big hardwood, and thought perhaps some photos would be good to show that contrary to what I have heard...a 5 inch blade can be used to baton some bigger lumber if you are determined.

After a few passes:

about 20 minutes after I started with this log (the knife is stuck in exactly the same spot as in photo 1):

Some of the fruits of the effort:

Still plenty of edge left to make tinder:

And the "patina" is starting to come along nicely...finally starting to get some metal showing through at the shoulders:

This is a fun knife to own!...thanks for sharing my fun.

I got a nice fire going after this, but failed to take any photos of that...we were all too busy dancing around the flames like a bunch of little boys;)

Here is a side by side...that 5 took this log down a few belt sizes...

Nothing looks better then a well used knife.
It appears that you've been giving your bow drill divot a workout as well.

I have been giving myself more of a workout than any part of this knife, but yeah we workout together frequently;)

Here is a link to one of my videos regarding the divot if you want some entertainment.

Very cool. I enjoy reading your posts and looking at the pics. I just got my 5 and 3 mil in the mail yesterday. The 5 is a beast, I can believe how it feels in my hand! I feel like I could chop down a tree with this thing! I can't wait to get out into the woods and give this a beating to see what it can do!

Could you tell us more about that edge you've put on there?

Reprofiled to 20 degrees inclusive on the flat (and 25 at the belly/tip) to knock the shoulders off, then ground a 40 degree edge on the whole length. Everything is polished to 0.5 micron.

It performs very well for my needs. Suffice to say this edge was arrived at after some experimentation.

There is some discussion of it (and some edge pron) here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=796478
