Working some stuff out

Hey all,

I know what you're thinking, if I have several knives from other people to work on, why am I working on HK knives? several reasons

1. I usually start on something else before going to the main project because it gets me in the grove, if i'm going to make mistakes, i'd rather it not be on someone else s property.
2. we have a festival coming up in our town and I'd like to display some JK's/HK's while rebecca sells her books.
3. Did I mention my house flooded recently and I may be working out some frustration, again, not doing it on someone elses knives.
4. also waiting for some supplies for other peoples stuff

I asked john to add some extra pin holes this time around to i've me options, not set on the holes yet but these provided some interesting choices.

(I'm also experimenting with brass and copper core 1/8" pins, kind of interesting looking), anyway, take a look could ya?

this one's in stained spattered maple and bocote, still putting some finishing touches on it but here you go

this one, well, it's a good example of why i didn't want to work on otehr peopls stuff just yet, i love the color combo on the scale material; (osage and unstained spattered maple) but messed up the divider as you'll see in the last picture, also, no, this one isn't as finished as the last one, figure i'll just have to start over on it so i stopped.

see it?

here's what it should look like

I'm also hoping to come up with some different sheath ideas (should they stay basic and cheap or more detailed and more expensive...anyone?)

anyway, just thought i'd share something other than a whine for a change :) hope you like it

that is just some errant stain on the fourth pin in the first two pictures fyi, rubbed right off.

Those are supurb. I looked at each picture several times and the thought kept coming to me that "these are heirloom pieces". Beautiful!

Yes - those are a nice iteration. I admit that I prefer the 4 pins on the first one rather than the 5 pins on the 2nd. Maybe 6 pins will look more pleasing to my eye. I'm not really a guy who needs symmetry but in this scale, placement is important - easy to loose the balance of the piece. I do like the osage and maple combo.

Hope your day to day is easing up. Sorry for your recent troubles.

Nice stuff - and way to go out there and try new things.

I have been considering having some Scanduckie blanks made and sent to you so we could have some special scales made to make it look like a duck body - either a wood duck or a mallard etc - would take some creative use of materials and liners......but looks like you are getting into that kind of thing.....

Nice work, Peter. What do you think happened with the brass spacer? Inconsistency in the metal?

I am in for a scanDuckie...

Can't believe I just said that.:D:D

Hi Peter,
Your handles are looking real nice. I think your knives will sell just fine with great blades and beautiful handles. If you feel like taking the sheath up a notch, I like the pouch style with stitching going up the spine part way. It brings out the shape of the knife better and doesn't take a whole lot more work. Also a straight clean stitch helps. Adding a lining adds more work, time, and material.

I am really enjoying seeing your work, Peter. Really nice stuff!

thanks everyone,

i'd "give it a go" andy, for sure

haha - Cooper - you are sick. In a good way.

I'll talk to Mr. K at the gathering - see what he says about a small run of Scanduckies to send to Peter.

Cooper: it's really awkward to clamp them I image the expanding epoxy pushed it out a little...or I just didn't notice it was flush when I elf it to set.

okay, last one before i start working on some other stuff (I'm expecting some liners and other material in today)

I'm trying out a new wood finish, it's a little more work to get it to settle in and finish out but I think it'll produce that nice luster on a wood handle and prove to be better protection in the long term without maintenance then linseed oil.

oh, and it's wearing cocobolo with copper core pins in a "3 star" set up

I think the 4 pinned version looks better (and so does the 3 pin), and although I'm partial to Brass, the Copper looks pretty nice. With copper I was wondering doesn't it tend to turn green after a while unless it's got a coating over it like laquer.?

I'm loving what I'm seeing. You do some really cool work. You just might have a future in this business if you play your cards right.

thanks, mack, was wondering if i'd gone to far with the pins.

think i'll leave the making money to the professionals like john though :)
