Working with Baleen

Has anyone worked with baleen for knife handles? My cousin who lives further north than anyone really should is sending me a large chunk of baleen. He says it is all black. I have no idea what I am going to use it for but just thought I would ask if anyone has any experience withit.

no experience but it is supposed to be simular to finger nails and hair. Thus as horn.
Might make nice inlays

Looks like one must obtain it from alaskan native people then you can sell it however you want.

However, as Steve is a Canuck, I don't think he can legally acquire it particularly for resale. Will be interested to see other input though. I just recall issues when travelling to Alaska in 2002 regarding this product.

^Ooh, didn't see he was from canada. It'd probably woudn't be worth the hassle and legal troubles then.
