Hi there! Recently ive decided to under take the project of making some knives and i've run into some issues i was hoping someone could help me with. I'm using annealed 5mm d2 steel and ive managed to cut out and start filing/grinding a chamfer profile. Someone warned against grinding stainless as it could ruin the metal and i was wondering if that would be a problem with d2 as its known as semi stainless.

Let's move this to the knifemaker section....

Nope! It would not be a problem. Since it's annealed it will still need to be heat treated at some point meaning you can can't ruin it by grinding it in an annealed state.

Hi Im a special alloy tool steel supplier from Malaysia .

D2 is one of my bread and butter grade and we sell and machine D2 everyday .
You wont ruin D2 steel when grinding it . Importantly is after heat treatment , a proper tempering is highly recommended . Since your material is only 5mm , I would suggest the material to be tempered at minimum 520c x 3 temper to achieve 58 +- 2 HRC with good toughness and wear properties ( D2 / 2379 has V 0.9 % , high temper would bring the best out of this ) . With this , you could reduce the Retained Austenites in the steel , which would leads to better dimensional stability during grinding . Remember , importantly not to overheat the hardened blade , so wet grinding is recommended and the correct grade of grinding stone is important
