Bought some 80-55-06 "Spheroidal Graphite Iron" also called nodular iron from McMaster Carr. Heated it up and after a few heats it crumbled. What is this all about. I thought everything is pliable when heated. I had the stuff up to the normal red / orange range, but even if I was a little bit cold, I've been there with steel and it's never behaved this way. I just wanted a more reliable source of iron than scrap stuff and was interested in making some iron fitings. Any thoughts? How was it hot worked in the days when that's all there was to use?
Thanks,
Ed
