Working with John on a custom knife

What this knife is, is a copy (as close as I can recall) of my Grandfathers old handmade knife. The primitive version that I had a local blacksmith make (picture below) is much closer to what Grandpa had and John's version will be a more updated version of the knife. Mom tells me that Grandpa made the knife before she was born and she is now 91. No one knows where the actual knife went, but it was always on his belt. Back then, Grandpa was a farmer and did a little of everything, including bit of blacksmith work. He made the knife from scrap that he had around the farm.

I think a JK version of this knife will be really cool. Blade dimensions are 5 1/12" x 1 1/2" x 3/16" thick. The primitive version uses elk horn for the handle. For John's version, I am going with ironwood. Some pics of the primitive version:

That's a nice looking knife! I can't wait to see what JK comes up with. The only thing you know for certain is that it will be great!:D

I echo Rob's comment, very nice, can't wait to see it.

Thanks for the story behind it as well!

As most of you know, my favorites are the customer designs, so I`m looking forward to this one too!

This is cool. Having John make a copy of a family treasure is a great idea.

Beautiful knife with a most awesome family history. Looking forward to seeing the JK version.

Very neat - it will be another great project for us to watch - and thanks for the pictures and story of your grandfather and his knife!

This is a lot of fun and I enjoy projects like this, plus we get the cool idea of it being a copy of an old homemade knife. It appeals to me that back in the old days, people reused or re-purposed a lot of old things since they could not just get to town that often. Old files, buggy springs or saw blades got a new life.
