Working with Lightning Strike CF and gluing g10

Moved to Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment. Custom & Handmade is for true customs, not customized / modified, it is for art knives, collector knives.

Thank you Rycen. I send him a message about becoming a member to sell/trade some of my knives :)

Now to the g10 help

Well, for the one question about mostly flat/curved lightning strike carbon fiber, my best guess would be because that's how you really see the lightning strike pattern the best. This wouldn't be a big deal, but from what I've seen the lscf is more expensive than some other carbon fiber. No need to spend more for that pattern if your going to machine it so you can't see that pattern anyways! Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that though...

I kinda like it with the pattern. Maybe ill do the mid and bottom of the handles in a starburst pattern starting for the spine of the knife and ill leave the top flat

I think it works as an "accent", I wouldn't want the whole scale done like that but I think that's a great way to add some texture around the edges.

Hey Shepard - looks great! Question for you about the LSCF. I've heard from a couple of folks that the bronze wires in the LSCF can sometimes get loose and poke up through the surface of the CF. Other folks have told me that they've never seen this or had a problem with it. Have you see this with your samples? Does the embedded wire stay embedded in the CF as you shape and sand it down?

Just curious.

I like the material but I'm not in love with it. I like patterns and shapes. The only way this really looks good is with it being flat. Also there is no way to really buff the cf to make it shine without pulling all the bronze wire out of the surface
And yes I am constantly being poked here and there by a wire popping up. I used 3m pro grade sand paper from 150 up to 600. I also sanded it with 600 with water and then with some oil to help give it some shine.
Best way to get rid of a protruding wire is with a razer blade and cut the wire. That way you don't have to resand. However this leaves a small indent on the surface. It's too pricey, too hard to work with, and doesn't give you the rewarding feeling after all the work. I actually like my green handle better. Lol. I wanted to really like it. But I find myself more disappointed with it. I make great handles/scales and I'm happy with that. But how can u be happy when a wire pokes you and draws blood

Thanks for sharing the experience! I agree that your green handle turned out better, it looks awesome. Don't give up on carbon fiber altogether, try something besides lightning strike. You definitely have the talent to make it work :)
