I just ordered 2 slabs of burlap micarta to make new scales for my emerson a100. I have never worked with micarta or made scales for any of my knives yet but it seems like a fun project. The slabs are 1/4 inch thick, so I am thinking I will probably want to thin them out a little. I am planning on using some sand paper on a flat surface to accomplish this but if you guys have a better way I would love to hear it.

Yikes! You should have purchased 1/8" sheet. Anyway you can exchange it? I believe the scales are only about .100" thick. To thin 1/4" scales out enough by hand will be quite a task, to say the least. If the 1/4" are your only option, you may want to try to borrow a cheap sander from someone. Or perhaps you can rent one? Or buy if you are able. You will find more tasks, I'm sure. The Harbor Freight 1x30 can be had for around $35 with the right time/coupon. Or a simple floor sander can be propped in an upright position via a few clamps and block of wood. Post pics as you go. Good luck!
