Working with MOP

I have been thinking of building a GX6 kit knife with Mother of Pearl scales, damascus bolsters and mosaic pins instead of screws. I have never worked with MOP before, and don't have all that much experience in making knives. I have basically made a few kit knives, and put my own scales on some of my factory pieces. All of these projects have come out well enough, meaning a nice usable knife but with some small flaws I could see on close inspection. My biggest mistakes have been rushing to get things done.

I have a few questions on this project before I invest any of my hard earned cash in this. Could I pull this off, or should I try a few more easier projects first? Also, if I decide to try it out, would it be worth it to buy some scrap MOP to try working first, or just jump right in with the good stuff? Hopefully one day I will be able to make my own knife from a bar of steel.

Thanks in advance.

Pearl is pretty easy to work. Use new drills and back up the material so you dont blow out the other side. But when I was where you are at,I would stick to the man made materials till you have them mastered. Its alot easier to take when you mess up carbon fiber or G10 than a $80.00 set of pearl slabs. Alot of Pearl has fractures in it and you have to be carefull when buying/using it. I made an early pearl knife, came out real well. Was at the finishing stages and when I went to buff out the peral, it broke away where it met the liner along alot of tiny fractures. You learn as you go, I now know what "Not" to buy pearl wise.
