Working with the Work Sharp Ken Onion - symmetry?

Hi all,
after it was recommended to me in this board, I bought a Work Sharp Ken Onion belt sander.
I looked at a few videos and read the manual, then took their hints and tried to get acquainted using some kitchen cutlery that was blunt and would not cause tears if it went awry.
I do think I got the hang of it, because the results are holding up to the paper test, I even manage to get the tip right.

But.

When I sharpen a blade, I have the firm impression that the left side of the blade, the one that is sharpened on the right hand side where the belt pulls down, is taking off more material than the other side.
The bevel looks slightly larger on that side.
Is that normal, or a normal beginner's error? How do I correct it?
 
This is guessing but watch how you are dragging through the guides. Are you leaning to one way or the other each time?

Also and I cannot stress this enough, once you set the edge on a new knife you hardly ever need anything but the finer grit belt or even just a honing belt. Those belts will EAT steel in a hurry.
 
Personally, I would correct it by not using power tools to sharpen knives. I know I'd screw it up.
