Worksharp knife and tool sharpener for semi expensive knives?

I am totally sharpening inept, I have poor hand eye coordination and I just can't get a edge free hand, and don't enjoy it anyhow. So I looked at the edge pro and spyderco sharpmaker, both of which I "might" be able to use. The sharpmaker is relatively affordable, but slow especially if the edge is not 20degrees I remember reading, and I doubt Id be able to use it with bigger knives, at least not with my lack of skill.

The edge pro is twice the price of my most expensive knife and I am just a poor student.

So lately I have been reading great reviews on the worksharp knife and tool sharpener, especially for bigger knives, and as my BK-9 and kabar are both dull as a butter knife it will hopefully fix the edge, but will it work good for mid range knives such as a bench made griptilian or zero tolerence knife?

I hate to use my knives often because I know I can't sharpen them and that's why I didn't buy any knives for months, but I don't wanna grind a pocket knife to pieces or ruin the HT either.

Practice on cheap knives first. You might also consider using a SanRenMu 710 as practice for your pocket knives. With the included belts, I feel even the P220 removes too much metal. You can try the P400 or P600 belts on the Worksharp website.

And so long as you don't keep the blade in one spot for too long, you shouldn't be running the risk of ruining the heat treatment.

What a coincidence....

I have just sharpened one of my most cherished/precious knives -
a custom order (for me) ironwood drop-point hunter by the late Gordon DeFreest

Please see Post #33 in the thread:
 Review - Work Sharp (belt grinder) Knife Sharpener

I see you've just posted in that thread immediately below my post #33

Without meaning any disrespect to the brands you mentioned, the late Gordon DeFreest handmade knife is probably worth several times of any of those, and since he has passed on, one cannot even buy one unless one comes on the market....
and I just trusted the Work Sharp on that.

But if I have some practice and use higher grip belts it should work for pocket knives?

@ unknown, pocketknives are sometimes easier or harder to sharpen which is why I asked, but I am strongly considering buying one now.

My buddy was showing me his worksharp last week and wanted to show me by using my new delica 4 FFG. It now has a butterknife tip :(

Carefull with that thing

Practice with some cheap kitchen knives. That will give you an idea what how to handle a pocket knife. I sharpen everything I own on the Work Sharp. I don't currently and never have owned anything that cost over $200, but I would sharpen any knife on it.

Sinjans, sorry to hear about that. As with any sharpener, it will round tips with improper use. Being powered, it just does it faster. This is one reason why only I sharpen my own knives. If I bugger it up, I can't blame anyone else or be angry with anyone else.

Contact richardJ on here. He can reprofile your knife for you, if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself. Prices are good and turnaround it fast.
