Hello,

What Fixed and folder blades are the various Special Forces of the World issued these days ?

Please not your opinions on what should be issued, but rather what is actually issued to the the World elite soldiers.

Please no spam!

Thank you,

JB

Well, because I am dutch I know which knife the Dutch Special Forces (their name is: Korps Commando Troepen) are issued.

It is the Special Operations Knife (SOK), made by a small shop in Rotterdam, that makes handmade knives. The shop is called Hill Knives.
The steel is ATS-34 (59 Rc)with a black titanium coating, the handle and sheath are made out of lexan. blade length approx. 19 cm, overall 33 cm. weight about 330 grams.
Before the Ducth special forces used the Canadian copy of the Buck M-9 bayonet, or knives bought by each soldier themselves.
One of these knives was a Hill Knives, model KCT. When a high ranking officer saw this knife, he became interested. Enquieries were made and a specific model made. After testing, a batch of 400 or so SOK knives were ordered.
Now the knife is offered to the general people also.It costs around 300 euro, so about the same in USD.

As of now 120 views of the thread and only one post ?

How come nobody wants to participate ??

Thanks

Hello there.

Jack, I'm thinking that no one is responding because that question is asked constantly.
That's not your fault since you obviously don't know, but I'm telling you why.

That said, most "elite" military units have great flexibility in what equipment they can choose to use.

The key phrase here is "choose to use"; they usually aren't "issued" anything.

Here's a tip for you; if a manufacturer claims that his product was "chosen by the SEALs, Rangers, etc." or that it is "issued" to such-and-such elite force, it probably isn't, wasn't and never will be.

More often than not, such claims are pure marketing hype.

Those few who do make tools fine enough to be selected and actually used by elite military units don't have to advertise the fact.

Kinda like how if someone is really, really flashy and ostentatious, trying to put on a huge display of wealth, very often they are not that wealthy at all. Those with true wealth don't have to advertise the fact.

Get it?

One more thing:

It is a fact that many enlisted men, even some in "elite" detachments, carry Striders.

Have you ever heard of Strider knives, Jack?

Hello,

Are u referring to the Buck Striders ?

http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?BU880SP

If so, I agree a very nice folder, perhaps the only better one is Sebenza, but u pay big money for Sebenza'a

OR this:

http://www.striderknives.com/

I presume it is the latter, but they look more flash than high quality. I can only go by the pics, as they do not sell them in my town :)

T"he Commander is a battle tested and proven design that incorporates some of the most advanced ergonomics ever featured on a tactical folding knife. This knife is a civilian designate of a US Navy SEAL Knife used by an elite group within the Naval Special Warfare Teams."

This copy appears in the description of the Emerson Commander, on Knifecenter.com.

Most of the writeups on knives seem to be press-release-type material written by or for the individual manufacturers, i.e. Knifecenter does not write the copy for all of the makers whose gear it sells. One can fairly assume that Emerson Knives is responsible for this "US Navy SEAL Knife" claptrap, then.

I thought this was the kind of bunk that we use to distinguish which makers are more hype than substance? And I thought I'd read far and wide that Emerson makes great knives and is not the kind of manufacturer that would have to use "Navy SEAL" in its marketing... So... what's up??

Here are the current British army survival knife & machete.

To the best of my knowledge & belief, UK Special Forces do not have an issue knife. Like SF all over the world they have considerable autonomy & tend to acquire what works. (Which is why our SF use the M16 and M4, rather than the POS SA80 with its poor quality bayonet.

As others have said, the Elite guys basically use whatever they thnk is best. I would tend to think that almost any knife esoteric or common would have been fielded by some soldier, some place, at sometime:).

If you get a chance, check out www.usmilitaryknives.com , and check out all the various lots of stuff that get purchased for testing, etc.... by just American forces.

:).

Just my 2cents,
When I was in the spanish special forces they had an "official" knife, made by Aitor, the "Oso Negro", a websearch will give you the image of it. Before they had a small (4.5 inch blade machete) that was a lot better made. The Oso Negro is a good looking piece of s...t, nice looks but the tang is not integral, so the pommel usually broke off when used as a hammer.
Most of the knives carried by the troops were US pilots knives, some Kabars, some Glock knives and a mix of hunting knives.
I carried a Kabar, a Leatherman and sometimes a Aitor Botero(normally when we were on base).
Rumors say that the Spanish Special Forces are designing a new knife, I'll post a photo here as soon as its official.

In denmark the Glock Knife is standart issued, but from my time in the french 1th RPIMA (france)we all buyed our own knives...I've never seen a member of a navy seal group with a Sog sealknife when we were in exercices with them!
Most guys of my group then relied on EK knives...it was the "rolce royes" then...Other buyed typically a standart KA-BAR backed up with a spyderco Endura...
A lot of manufactures are using "specials forces " names to promote their products just because a group "may" have test one of their knifes...
Enjoy!

I am referring to the second link, Strider Knives, and I can assure you, they are all about high quality and ZERO "flash." How does that site or the knives look "flashy" to you?

The Buck-Striders are good blades, but don't hold a candle to the original, nor does the Sebenza.

Both are fine blades, but they are not Striders.
