SAN DIEGO – Mac Weakley of Carlsbad caught what could be the world-record largemouth bass early Monday at Dixon Lake in Escondido.
The bass weighed 25 pounds, 1 ounce on a hand-held scale, which – if approved – would shatter the world record, the 22-pound, 4-ounce bass caught by George W. Perry at Montgomery Lake in Georgia in 1932.

The catch will have to be approved by the International Game Fish Association.

That may be a problem, however, because Weakley said he foul-hooked the fish – meaning the hook lodged below the dorsal fin on the fish's side, not in the fish's mouth.

Weakley was fishing with his longtime friends Mike Winn and Jed Dickerson. Dickerson caught a 21-pound, 11-ounce bass at the same lake in 2003.

Update

The men believe this is the same fish that Dickerson caught almost three years ago, and which was also caught by another fisherman as a 20-pounder in 2001. They said the fish has the same identifying black dot under its right gill plate.

Weakley released the fish after taking pictures and videos of the weigh-in. But he did not take measurements of the fish, which also may be a problem when it comes to the game fish association approving it as a record catch.

25 lbs?? i cant even begin to imagine how big that is...if anyone has a genuine pic of bass that is around that weight id like to see it

Dang that would eat the largest bass I ever caught.
Glad they let her go though.

destroythealter,

I think it's considered unsportsmanlike to just snag and catch a fish, rather than actually catch them on the lure.

I caught this bass last week in Mexico. Take it times 2.5 and you will have your 25 pound bass. WOW!!!

Ain't nothin shabby bout a 10 lb bass, my friend.

Whadya catch it on? Plastic worm, jig and pig?

If this guy's been catching big fish for a while, you'd think he'd know by now to get measurements. Doubt it stands since it was foul hooked. May have been why he didn't take measurements.

Still, anyone who catches a world record bass and doesn't document it properly is a fool. If really a record, that's a million dollar (or more) fish in endorsements from fishing equipment companies. In other words, your children's or grandchildren's education and more. I'd still be guarding the fish when the wildlife officials showed up. If the fish lived, fine... I'd let him go. If the fish died, then he'd be mounted. But first and foremost, he'd be documented in every way possible to ensure the record.

Didn't there used to be an endorsement deal for a million bucks or something for the biggest Largemouth Bass.Endorsement deals were with rod,reel,line,bait/ rig?
Maybe I'm just getting old.
 :D

Hey, Danbo. I fudged a little...mine was 9 1/2 lbs...but now I have to go back sometime to catch that 10+ lunker. Caught it on an 8" Zoom lizard. Our group of four fishermen hauled in several between 5 bs and 9 1/2 in 4 days of fishing.
But. 25 lbs is a totally different story! If this guy fished a lot and didn't take measurements of it, something was wrong?

Well, here in the Midwest, a 9.5 lb Bass is HUGE!

One time, several years ago, I was fishing a private farm pond. This pond was unique, in that you only caught big fish. Whether it was bluegill, catfish or bass, you either caught a big fish or you caught nothing. One day, I was fishing with a Bomber model A in chrome/black and barely twitching it/slow retrieving it across the surface. Suddenly, the water exploded and I'm fighting the biggest bass of my life! Never came out of the water though, but still put up a heck of a fight. When I got it in, I had no plans to keep it, and no way to measure or weigh it. So, I grabbed a branch and cut it off, measuring it from the tail to the tip of it's mouth. Still have the branch in my drawer somewhere, but it means nothing to anybody except me. That branch is 24" long, by the way. My bass wasn't as fat as yours, so I imagine it "ONLY" weighed about 8 lbs or so. :)

The bass here are so small that they only have small mouths, no need for bigger ones !!!

Hey Danbo, you should pick up a digital scale for about $12 and slip it into your back pocket when you go. You never know when that big one is going to hit. I used to weigh my saltwater catches a lot. Biggest two bass (freshwater) I've weighed on it were just under 7 pounds and 6 pounds.

The IGFA has strict rules about record fish.
Snagged fish are definatley not counted.

He did well to let her go. She'll be bigger next year.

Just looked up the follow-up on this story.

A lot of trout get 'foul-hooked' on purpose in state parks, but this guy is a hard core bass fisherman. He threw the 'million dollar' fish back because he foul-hooked it. I'll bet he is back out on the water right now looking for that same fish, hoping for the right result!
