Worn sharpmaker stones

My brown Sharpmaker 204 stones are worn on the corners. They feel a little rough and you can see chips and divots, etc., if you look closely enough. Has this happened to anyone else, and will it hurt my blade to sharpen on those corners?

Thanks,
David

I recently purchased a 204 and one of the fine stones had some small nicks and rough spots. I wrote Spyderco and they said to send the stone in for warranty replacement. Good luck.

Yep, I worn out the brown stones on my 203, too. The corners ended up being small flats and it was worn unevenly. You can get replacements for around $5 each. Check the dealers on BF's links page. You can probably get them direct from Spyderco Factory Outlet.

By the way - Sal mentions this in the 204 training video and it is normal. I sharpened about 80 knives before mine needed replacing.

If the stones' profiles remain straight and even, then you can try rubbing them lightly together to smooth them out or file out any nicks and such. It wouldn't be a great idea to sharpen edges w/them if the nicks are pronounced.

Personally, I like the fairly worn stones over the brand new ones. If you clean them well and keep their profiles even, they work really nicely, IMO!

The corners on my brown stones have worn too. Now I reserve them just for my serrated knife and use my Razor's Edge Pro kit for everything else. Why do those corners wear, I wonder...

Why do they wear?
They have to! In order to stay agressive, the surface has to wear off (slowly), otherwise it would eventually clogg/glaze.
The secret of a good stone ist to stay sharp!
Like any tool, it has just a "limited life" before it must be "re-done".
The finer stones do also wear, but so slowly, that they will probably outlast you....
Happy sharpening.

I probably sharpened about 50 blades on them. Maybe I pushed too hard. They don't cut very fast, dag nabbit, and I wanted that benchmade reprofiled! I'll be gentler on the next set.

The gray stones will wear, they are open celled and friable. Actually, they work significantly better when they have wear. I use them until they no longer work, which is a great deal of wear. (a very wide flat)

Pressing harder, doesn't make them cut faster, there is an optimum pressure that one generally learns with use.

The gray stones are not recommended for serrations, only the white corner. (They are too coarse and can easily distort the serration. If you use the gray stone for serrations, a fairly new one and a very slow motion works best.

Thanx for the support.
