Worst High End Production Folder - Over $100

A Strider AR. I FINALLY got to play with one and I will say this...I was not impressed at all. It was NIB and I found it at a knife shop in Springfield Missouri. The blade was off center and the lockup BARELY hit. Maybe this was just a bad one, but I wouldnt buy a Strider after seeing it, no way.

I am surprised about the Strider. I have 4 of them now in different styles. SNG, GB, TAC GB, and AR. I am pretty pleased with them. There is a weird phenomenon that I used to be skeptical about. My SNG had what I thought was a good action. After about 200 openings it went from good to great. In any event, if you have a chance to check out another, try to.

As far as the topic, I haven't really come across one. There are a few that were not what I expected, but not terrible. The top of the list was probably the Emerson Raven that I had. Excellent quality, but I could not get comfortable with it and had difficulty with the thumb disk. Just the ergonomics on that knife didn't match my hand.

Actually pay "over $100" for a production folder?

My vote goes for Emerson, i have seen a bunch of them, brand new at stores with horribly defective locks. For the $$$ they sell for, the QC is pretty poor IMO. Yes, i know theyll make it right, but it should have been right in the first place. I can accept one or 2 getting by, but Emerson is letting way too many get by, many with truly dangerous locks. They really need to look at their QC measures, cause it aint working. Generally, its the locks that are the issue.

To tell the truth, i cant think of another $100+ production folder with very poor quality, maybe some years ago, but not lately, its amazing how good a knife can be bought these days for $100.

I'd have to agree with Megalobyte about the Emersons. I like the knives (especially the CQC-7A and CQC-7B), and have owned five different models, but have had liner lock problems with all of them. All of the liners wore way too fast and would easily unlock with only a moderate grip. Sold most of them off. Still like the designs though. I'm curious to see how the new framelock CQC-7 is going to work out.

I'm 14 and broke, and I don't have any knives over $100. The best folder I have is the AR, and that, according to Gerber, retailed for about $50 but I got it for $39. I probably won't get my $100+ knife until I get a job, and then I'm going to save long and hard for a Sebenza.

I hate to jump on a bandwagon but the two Emersons I have owned have been disappointing. The Raven and PSark both had problems and I traded them off for knives with better fit, finish and function.

I have to say that I was disappointed in more than the quality, because I had heard so much about the Emerson line that I was expecting great things and only found mediocre quality at best. The pivot screws won't stay set, and the blades were not centered. I hated to get rid of the PSark because I liked the design and intended purpose of the blade but off it went.

I know Emerson has a great following and I don't mean to insult anyone's knife of preference, but this has been my experience. I am still interested by some of the models but will not purchase or trade for any more Emersons.

EMERSON
and i hope ernies on this thread to read it!

i bought a 2000 commander, and the ergos were GREAT~!

but everytthing else was BAD
the blade was roughly ground on the top, the grind of course is bad.
the blade wasnt centred wehn i first gotr it, and had that fixed. the edges were really jagged and once again, i had that fixed.

i sold this knife after it was fixed up, and i know the person who bought it sees some things that i do, but atleast i know he is in to this kind of knife.

I sold the knife and quickly picked up a kershaw leek, now THAT is a knife, i cant wait for my random leek

I'd have to say Emerson as well. The Commander has always struck me as a poorly excecuted fantastic design.

Years ago, my band (music) was friendly with another band. We used to play a lot of the same venues. This band wrote some AMAZING songs, the problem was; none of them could play them very well. The drummer couldn't really keep time, the bassist was sloppy, the guitarists really didn't know what they were doing, the singer was almost always off key, but you could HEAR the potential in their songs. If they had gotten someone else to play them, they would have blown everybody away!

I've often thought of them when I think about the Emerson Commander; a FANTASTIC design which never seems to fully realize it's potential. Still, there are a great many people who swear by them...

Sorry if that's a little too 'out there'...

From the knife i had I am suprised about QC. The quality on mine was good, it just didn't fit me right.
