Worth Sending Back to Knife to Spyderco for Warrenty?

I bought my dad a Spyderco Endura about two years ago for his birthday. We work on a dairy farm and he hard uses his knives, not abuse, but he probably does stuff that is not manufacture approved. He snapped his Endura a couple days ago doing a normal, safe, job of opening a bale of hay. Is it worth it to send it back to Spyderco hoping for a replacement?

Here are some pictures if it helps.

The only way to know for sure is sending it back.

I would say yes. At the very least contact them.

That would be abuse...

Contact them and ask. If they tell you to send it in, worst case would be they look at it, say no amd you're only out about $5 shipping. Best case, your dad gets a new, or rebladed, knife. If they told me to send it, I'd gamble the $5 to try to save $65.

Kind of, I guess what I meant was he uses the knife like a tool from a user point of view, and not like a tool from the manufacture's point of view. He doesn't abuse (as in try to destroy) his knife. He doesn't use his knife as a screwdriver, but he might shove it into a knot of strings that wrapped around a pump, and apply more side-to-side force than Spyderco thinks is okay. Well, on second thought, most of his not manufacture approved usage would be of the "kill the edge" type, not of the "snap it in half" type of "abuse".

Wow, I don't know why I didn't think to send them an email. I'll do that, thanks for the suggestion!

If the knife broke in that particular location when being used for a normal cutting (and not prying) task, absolutely send it back and see what Spyderco says. They'll make the actual call on if it is warranty or not and while I cannot speak to this instance, I can say they are extremely fair when it comes to these things.

Even if it is not covered under warranty completely, they can probably do a blade replacement or model replacement for a lot less money than what it would cost to buy new. So I will dare say they will work with you to where sending it to them is worth the time and effort. Send the knife in a Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope (properly padded of course) for $5 and you have tracking and insurance.

No...Spyderco does not do blade replacements. If it is just the tip that snapped they will re-profile it for $25....other than that you are out of luck. I really like some of Spydercos designs but this is one thing I just hate about them. You cant even purchase a new blade if something like this happens. If you send it in you will have wasted $10 ($5 to ship it and the $5 enclosed for return shipping) and a months time waiting for a response.

Only Spyderco W&R can make these decisions. Ignore all of us and contact W&R. Good luck!

While it's true that Spyderco does not "do blade replacements", if they consider the break to be a warranty issue they either replace the knife, if it's still in production, or issue a credit good at SFO for the last MSRP if it's not. The same is true for almost all warranty issues. They don't stock parts for models made overseas and on US made models it's almost always more cost effective for them to replace, rather than repair, the knife.
